not sure how much it matters but I cant seem to find much info online.

Any suggestions for a new battery for a Z4C 3.0si - will something I can pick up from Halfords just explode and melt my car as if it were a malfunctioning Tesla??!!

cheers

I just bought and fitted a Bosch S5 battery a month ago, physically smaller & lighter than the original BMW battery that it replaced. Just remember to code the car if you're going form AGM to standard. I used Carly for BMW to code mine.

Pretty sure the op’s car is too old for an AGM battery and doesn’t have IBS.

My car is a 2007 E92, and needed coding.

I found the main dealer fitted price not unreasonable for my E85. Did it while I waited iirc.

What age and model is your car? You should jump start BMWs from the under bonnet points.

Coding means that they attach a diagnostic machine to the car and "tell" it that it has a new battery. That way the car will apply a charging regime suitable for a new battery. At present it is probably applying a regime suitable for an old battery.

OP, you'll be fine with an "ordinary" battery as E86 ones aren't AGM or coded.

My Z4C had one in December 2016 (at 10 years old) and it cost me £90 + VAT including fitting (I would have fitted it myself but the car was in for a diagnostic check so that wasn't an option).

The replacement was OEM, which my BMW Indy tells me is by Exide (well Z4s were made in Spartanburg after all)!

Whereas when I had to buy one for my E87 123d with stop/start nonsense (after only 4 and a half years) it was an AGM one coded to the car so the car needed to be told it had a new one via OBD and it cost over £250 in 2012. eek

Final question:

IS buying a battery from Halford a stupid Idea?

the best batery they seem to have recommended for the Z4 is:

Yuasa 5 Year Guarantee HSB096 Silver 12V Car Battery
Yuasa 5 Year Guarantee HSB096 Silver 12V Car Battery is new to our range of car batteries. Yuasa Silver batteries come with a 5 year guarantee.

Yuasa Silver car batteries allow around 50,000 engine starts, compared to around 20,000 on a normal battery. Silver car batteries come fully charged, ready to fit and are completely maintenance free.

This battery is ideal for drivers using one or more plug in devices, such as phones, cool boxes, DVD players, and Sat Navs. For drivers using air conditioning Silver batteries are more suitable. Thanks to their increased starting capacity (CCA), these batteries are best for cold mornings.
Yuasa 5 Year Guarantee HSB096 Silver 12V Car Battery Extra Info

Bench Charge: 6amps

I would go somewhere else but due to working hours halfords is SOOOOOO much easier

surely a battery is just a battery and worst case scenario it goes kaput in 3 years ?

Eurocarparts an option?

(Almost certainly a lot cheaper than Halfords + free delivery).

I use EXIDE batteries, pop your car details into their battery finder. Put the part no into eBay. That’s they cheapest way I found to buy a decent battery.
