Hi guys,

Currently I have the E60 535D LCI remapped to 370 BHP and an incredible 750 nm torque, have been considering upgrading to a newer model but need a little help in choosing between the two in the topic title.

Currently the E60 is returning 34 MPG on my daily commute to and from work, that's 30 miles each way which involves in around 20 minutes of stop start traffic up to the motorway and 30 minutes of constant 70mph motorway drive. It's costing me around £60 a week just for my work run, was considering going for a 2L but I am going to miss the power to much and comparing MPG on autotrader between the few 2L and 3L there doesn't look to be a huge difference between them and been told that the newer 3L BMWs are really economical!

I understand that a lot of people promote the S drive rather than the xDrive as its a more enjoyable and fun car being RWD like all my previous BMWs but how does it compare against the 335D xDrive in terms of fuel efficiency? There doesn't look to be huge MPG difference when comparing them via Autotrader consumption but would like real world answers.

Also note if I do go for the 335D xDrive I will be lowering it to help the handling, also both cars will get a remap from DMS, will i really miss the power going from a 535D down to a 330D? Is the consumption hugely different between the 330D sDrive and 335D xDrive?

Thanks

Hello Iddz as no one has come on I will have a go for you. From all the chats Ive seen and had re my F30 30d sdrive I reckon on motorway journeys the x drive 335d can get 50 mpg while I have seen 60mg not often but ive seen it London to Leeds mostly middle lane for example. I had an Efficeny Dynamics 120d and can confidently say my 330d is better on mpg. At 2000 RPM the 120d was 70mph the 330d is 90mph

It seems that overall the mpg of 335d splits the difference of my car and a 340i The heavy Xdrive does not help at all mpg wise.

If I went Diesel again *25k miles plus a year I would still get the 330d it really is a poweful car ,sport is more than quick enough in the UK , But because of all the Diesel hate it may be the 340i which seems to get over 40mpg on a motorway run.

Just to finish on a long run I do M4 london to gloucestor in the evening I just cannot get it under 40mpg and thats driving it like I stole it

Good Luck

2y in a 335d here

Broadly speaking:

At 70 mph on the motorway it does 50mpg
At 80 mph it returns 40mpg
Around town its in the 30's

Havent reset my trip for ages and have several thousand mixed miles under the wheels - its showing 39 mpg overall

Cheers

335d xdrive here. 19k miles.
44 mpg overall on computer, which ties in with my brim-to-brim tests.
Yesterday, on an 18 mile return journey I saw 51 mpg
I have never seen below 40mpg, ever.
Cruising cross country gets 50 mpg.

435d around town, 28mpg
335d which is mixed use. 14k miles, 4k around town, the rest on the A40/M40, 38mpg.
Previously had a 330d non xDrive which did 29mpg around town.
All readings according to the car.

Having had both 30d and 35d with the 8 speed Sports Auto gearbox I'd take the 30d everytime.
The xDrive isn't great, the extra power not that noticable but the 30d felt much smoother.

One late evening on the M4 I did a test with my f30 330d resetting obc.........for 15 miles at 70mph got 56mpg 15 miles at 80mph got 46mpg all comfort mode.....did 15 miles at 55-60 mpg in eco mode got a crazy 72 mpg......would love to know what a 340i would achieve.Had done same test same part of M4 in my 120d and the 330d was better by 2 mpg in each......I reckon there is about a 6mpg difference between a 335d and 330d another poster here seems to confirm that.

I had a 2014 330d X-drive and managed 37.0mpg average using the OBC (which I know over read by about 8%). Loads of local driving with the odd long distance thrown in.

I have a 2017 435d and it is currently on 37.4mpg over all average. Same driving, although I have done a couple of extra long journeys recently.

Both calculated over about 6 or 7k miles.

Around town both do around 33mpg in the summer and 29mpg in the Winter.

On a journeys over 15 miles they will both do north of 40mpg, usually around 44.

On a recent 200 mile trip through horrible traffic the 435d managed 47mpg. On the way back when the roads were empty and I was able to get my clog down it did 42mpg.

I would suggest the key with these is getting them warm. When cold you're going to be in and around 30-35 with both. Once warm you'll be getting over 40,

I don't notice much of a difference between the two, mpg wise. Both are X-Drive though.

F31 335d X-Drive

Commute from Bolton to Liverpool every work day, various routes, motorway, a roads & a bit of city driving, last 2 months I've averaged 42mpg mixed including a few heavy foot moments.

i planned to do it longer but the missus messed the maths up with a random semi fill smile

Had a 2013/63 330D S-drive for three years and 69000 miles and swapped it for a 2017/17 335D X-drive in Jan and so far done 6000 miles so this is a pertinent topic for me. Firstly have a look at the photo which is hopefully attached. I'm really not a "Sunday driver" type and this three and a half hour journey was between Somerset and the Wirral on motorways and (having picked up two speeding tickets since Jan!) keeping mainly to the limit and using ECO PRO mode. The modest average speed was a result of almost continual 50 mph limit roadworks on the M5 and especially M6 rather than me hogging the inside lane! I was astounded by this return from a car which does 0-60 in 4.8 (but obviously not at the same time)

In general terms I really like the 335. I think the engine is smoother and you can feel the extra power over the 330. The 4x4 is invisible to me except in March when I easily drove off my drive in thick snow and in circumstances which my 330 wouldn't have managed.

Both my cars have adaptive suspension but I much preferred the handling of the 330. The x-drive is quite soft and feels a little "wallowy " especially when not in sport but I can't bring myself to pay for replacement ACS springs on such a new car ..... yet! 330 had the dreaded EGR exhaust valve problem which I hope won't be repeated in the newer car.

So overall and specifically addressing your MPG issue, the 335 is a little thirstier but still amazingly competent given its performance

My 335d is on Bridgestones and is just diabolical in the snow, what brand of rubber does yours wear please?

And before anyone kicks off I never expected it to traverse the Arctic on standard tyres, Im just staggered at how awful it is in even a light dusting of white stuff. Theres a slight hill I had to abandon this year, say 4% gradient maximum, that lots of S Line Audis with similarly fat tyres (and every other car) just drove down uneventfully whilst I slithered down without much control and then just gave up.

Cheers

430d s drive here

30-35 around town and 40 on motorway, I could get more but I’m addicted to the torque in it so find myself in sport all the time for the sensitive throttle and being pushed back into my seat!

I’m surprised your 535d gets that much considering its an older car using the 6 speed ZF.

If I was you, I’d go for the 335d X drive, this RWD/AWD is nonsense for a diesel rep mobile, I had a 630d x drive loaner and couldn’t believe the feeling of 0-30. A 335d X drive is over a second quicker 0-60 than that as well!

It's still on its original BMW - fit Bridgestones as the car has only driven 10000 miles. I'm not a fan either although it did deliver in the snow back in March. My 330D also had Bridgestones and when they finally needed replacing I followed the example of several on here and fitted Goodyears. Much better ride. Then I sold the car 1000 miles later only to be back with Bridgestones again! I'm not so abhorred that I'm going to replace them before the right time but looking forwards to fitting Goodyears again.

If it was downhill, was it your technique rather than your car? My 330d x-drive on Bridgestones was no Land Rover but surprisingly good up hill, and downhill (if I stayed off the brakes).
