320i xdrive estate possible purchase

Family car is currently a 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX 5 door that we've had from new. It's been great, 100% reliable, but a few things looming & thinking of changing. Would like petrol, manual, something that's less road tax & a bit better mpg than the old Subaru, which is about 20-25mpg, with general running around. 4wd has been very useful at times, as our village is through the lanes to get to & the Subaru seems to plough through anything. We also often end up in Wales & Scotland in winter-time, so again have needed more than rwd, but not a Land Rover. Has anyone gone from a Subaru to an xdrive 320i estate & been happy/regretted it? Are they reliable, good to drive, any thoughts? Been looking on Autotrader, but not driven one yet. Would be upto 4years old, as budget upto £18k. Thanks
