1 series 1.6i manual loss of power

Hi any ideas welcome, intermittent fault changing down 6th to 5th or 5th to 4th lose power and picks up again after a minute or so

Does an engine light come on at all? Best thing to do at this stage is to get it scanned for any stored codes, see if the ECU has picked anything up.
