I have only very brief exposure to the 125D as I had one as a courtesy for a day.
It had the ZF Auto and the gearbox suited it well - it felt a bit quicker than the 123d, but although I drove one of those a lot more, it was a fair while ago now.
The bigger difference is in the ride quality, which was much better on the 125d - the 123d was an M Sport on 18's with RFT and the ride wasn't great.
123d had (in some cases) the less reliable 2.0d Engine which had issues that you can look up - the one we had was fine (had it from around 2010 to 2013) and nothing went wrong in that time - I'd say the interior is a decent step up in the newer car too.
Unless your mileage is high though, I can't think that the price difference between 125d and M135i can't be that big...

The price of a 125d would have me seriously considering the M135i instead, they are both efficient enough engines and the extra turbo on the 125d will offset any MPG increases due to the extra power being there and likely being used much more. I'd consider the 325d at that price range as well.
