At the moment I’m driving a BMW530d SE, but I’m thinking of PXing it for a 2005 BMW 645ci petrol. Does anyone know if the 645ci have had any issues mechanically or electrically and what I should be looking for before parting with any cash, (blanking off Swirl Flaps like on the 530d).Any help would be grateful.

They suffer from a leaking coolant pipe under the inlet manifold and valve stem oil seals fail.

The stem seal leaks are an engine out job & budget for change out of £2k at an independent specialist.

I found this buying guide really useful when I bought mine.

A 2005 645 is a very cheap way these days into a V8 powered GT. However they were a £70k car when new and come with complexity and bills to match. Even if you DIY the parts are not cheap. Don't get me wrong, I love this car but it's not an E36 or E39.

There are garages around now who have the aga kit to replace the valve stem seals in situ with costs around £800 so not a big deal nowadays. There is a stent kit that can be got for the coolant transfers pipe which is less than £1000 so could be worse and you would be unlucky to get both issues,
The N62 is a leaky unit though so head gaskets, alternator gasket and timing chain gaskets can and do fail.
As said these were expensive cars New so come with the possibility of expensive upkeep bills.

I've had my 2005 645ci for just over three years now.
I usually change cars after about two years but can't really think of anything else I'd like as much without spending a fortune.

It's been a fickle bugger though!
Rocker cover gaskets leaked, you have to drop the engine for access so it's not a particularly cheap job and you might as well change out all the other seals in the area at the same time.
The engine and gearbox sumps are both plastic, and warp slightly over time causing leaks. I've had both of mine replaced.

As mentioned the coolant pipe in the V can leak, the stent repair is cheaper than replacing the pipe but still requires quite a bit of digging to get to. It's not that common a fault, but something to bear in mind.

Mine is currently occasionally coming up with a warning when I start the car, Indy recons it's a vacuum issue and can be sorted at service time. My satnav is also on the blink, another common issue to most BMWs this age. Mines been fixed once already so it's likely to need a new or reconditioned unit if I decide to fix it again.

As previously mentioned they're complicated cars that are now old, but still have 70k running costs.

If it was another car I'd have changed it by now, as I had most of the problems in quite a short space of time.
However this one gets forgiven as soon as I can take it out for a decent run. It's still a really nice thing to drive, still makes a great noise and still puts a smile on my face when one of the diesel brigade tries to outrun it.

I've decided to avoid ever having a go in an M6...
