Anyone got any ideas of where it is located (pictures would be great). I have made numerous google searches and can’t find a decent picture. I need to replace the sensor on bank 1 and there appear to be several incarnations of the sensor which all look slightly different.

Is it an N52/N53 engine ?

The N5x engines have two cam sensors. They are on the front of the cylinderhead, pointing upwards into the sticky-out-bit of the cylinderhead.

Yeah it is the N52. Just found them following your advice. I'm showing a fault code on bank 1 so going to rplace the sensor on the intake side and hope it clears. If not I will have to start considering the vanos solenoid (which I could find!!)

I guess you could switch the two sensors around and see if the fault code moves to the other side.

The solenoids are close to the sensors, directly underneath in fact, and in the middle of the front face. They have a sort of steel plate holding them in position.

It may be possible to clean them. They are quite sensitive to contamination.
