It’s coming up 2 years I’ve had my 430d GC and while it’s a brilliant car, it’s lacking in noise, doesn’t sound like anything when pressing on and I have been looking around for other cars to buy for months now that can fulfil my needs.

I drove an M4, M2, checked out multiple deals and exchanged many phone calls trying to find the right deal and eventually I came to the conclusion an M car isn’t affordable nor a smart idea.

I looked at non M alternative’s I.e the 40i variants and couldn’t justify the change in cars and extra money for the same car albeit with more noise and a small increase in performance (in the real world the 440i isn’t that much quicker than the 430d).

I gave up in the end and I’ve decided to renew my warranty and wait until next year to replace my car.

An A6 BiTDi went past the other day and it sounded brilliant, I thought it was an S6 at first until I saw the TDI badge, I researched this and realised it sounds like that from the factory so I went to look at after market exhausts for my 4 and found out BMW do a sound kit for my car.

It’s 1800 fitted with the M performance tailpipes (I have no interest in them)

I’m going to BMW on Monday to pick up my car after some warranty work so I’ll get an official quote for only the thing that enhances the noise.

Will I be called a wker by pedestrians for driving past sounding like a petrol when it’s a diesel? Good or bad idea hehe

In my opinion, a total waste of money to install an MPE on a diesel.

The A6 BiTdi has a special loudspeaker/resonance chamber built into the actual exhaust, which gives it this love it or hate it rumble, but for a diesel it is probably as good as it gets. The MPE does not have that and you will not replicate any sporty sound with it.

What you could do, is code the Active Sound Design to fake the interior sound to an engine of your liking: clearly not a “solution” for the purists, but the noise played over the loudspeakers can be changed. On my F15 X5 I tried coding it to the X5M (with the 4.4 V8 twin turbo engine) and it does provide a resemblance of a petrol engine. All you need is an OBD interface (VGate Icar2 for 20 euro from Amazon) and downloading the BimmerCode app (30 euro) and you can knock yourself out with synthesised engine sounds.

To be fair, just like big, oddly coloured wheels and trim, no one is going to notice other than you.

Seems a strange thing to try and make a diesel sound good......I've had lots of BMW diesels .....currently use a 640d GC for work and sound isn't what they are about at all!!

That is a good suggestion however it already makes a half decent noise from the inside, synthesised of course.

In this video it sounds fairly similar to the A6, I can’t find any videos of them accelerating so it makes it more difficult.

I’ve thought about this but I’m pretty content with the power, I mean who wouldn’t want their car to be faster but I’d rather put the 1280 (I checked the power kit months ago) towards something I can hear and not feel. If I had a 20d, I’d definitely go for the power kit/re map but the car is so quick as it is, I don’t see the point!

True, you’re right on that front, that isn’t what the cars about but it’s such a quick car, it’s almost a shame it doesn’t make any noise, it sounds nice in the driver’s seat but from the outside, it makes hardly any noise. Whenever my brother borrows it I ask him to boot it off and literally, a small throaty straight 6 roar for a few seconds until it flies off into the distance hehe

Further more, I’ve heard a few maseratis before and they all do it, even on the petrol models, they sound like twin turbo v8’s when idling but the noise disappears when they drive off unless they floor it and then it sounds like a V6, can’t be that bad

Apologies, didn’t know there was a specific active MPE for the diesel - it has the same built in speaker as the A6 BiTDI. In that case, it might be worth it, was one of the things I liked about my A6.

Isn't that absolutely ideal? That means you get the noise and nobody else does. Why do you care what it sounds like outside when you are inside?
