BMW X5 3.0 30D SE or 40d M Sport
Discussion
Hi
I am looking to upgrade my BMW 320 to 7 seater and 2 options we are considering are BMW X5 or Land Rover DIscovery Sport. But we found rear seat of Discovery sport very disappointing. So now our attention is on BMW X5. There are many versions listed on Autotrader but am not sure difference. Is there a source where we can compare different versions.
Also, for the price difference of £2500 (£22000 vs £24500) is 3.0 30D SE good as compared to 40d M Sport? what is the difference in these 2 models?
Thanks a lot
Dhane

We have a brand new X5 40d Msport with 7 seats. Now I’ve not experienced the back seats in the disco sport, but the ones in the X5 are completely useless for adults, but would be ok for kids on occasion.
The rear bench however is quite a lot bigger in the X5 and the leg room is very good - I imagine the rear bench would be identical in all models of X5.
Matt from Carwow does cracking SUV reviews on YouTube and tests all the seat configurations - go take a look.
30d vs 40d. Push comes to shove there is very little difference in normal driving, the 40d just has a little bit more poke and is effortless when cruising. Although the 30d still feels strong and never feels underpowered.
I opted for the 40d as the right stock car was available. However if I was buying used I would have happily settled for a 30d if everything else (mileage and spec) was what I wanted.

As already mentioned, the main difference, is the engine.
3.0d is the single turbo, the 4.0d has two turbo's and thus has 50hp and 70Nm more grunt.
If extra performance for a small penalty in fuel consumption is your thing, the 4.0d is the one to go for. The M-Sport will have a nicer thicker rim steering wheel as well, and the sports seats. Depending on what year, it might have the paddle shift wheel as well.
The one negative that maybe an issue with the M-Sport over the SE is the tyre costs, as tyres for the bigger staggered wheels, especially those 300+ section rears are somewhat expensive compared to the same size all around 19" tyres on the SE. This also means you can run the SE on all-season tyres as well, if winter performance without need of a 2nd set of rims is of benefit to you.

I had a 4.0d 7 seater M Sport.
Put 160k on it without a single issue. 7seater, rear seats ok for toddlers, any distance bigger kids will start grumbling.
Got 20k from a set of tyres easily, and also had no trouble finding 20” winters. Comfort seats were a must have, it was a genuine all round do anything car.
Land Rovers i wouldn’t touch with a bargepole. They’re made of chocolate with a melting dealer network.
