Hi all going to look at a 2004 645i manual tomorrow, I'm keen to have another v8 and this one popped up, looks like its been well looked after and kept up together with loads of money spent on it, anything I should be looking out for? Any expensive common engine issues I should be aware of? Cheers for your help

N62 valve stem seals and leaky timing chain covers for engines over 80k, but more likely at 100k+

Start engine, leave it idling for a few minutes - then rev it. Big cloud of smoke means they need doing. Thousands in a dealer, perhaps around 1k at a specialist who has the correct tool. Search for N62 valve stem seals on here to find it. Also my website has the diy info for it if you are confident to do it.

Timing chain covers more of an annoyance than terminal do them at the same time as the stem seals.

oh right ok, cheers. Am I right in saying the smoke clears with stem seals as it burns away eventually? I remember many moons ago had the same issue with my cavalier sri, plume of smoke on start up that cleared indicated valve seals and piston rings if it didn't, those were the days lol. I believe a main dealer has been looking after it for him. he says it has had New tyres to the front, with oil service, new coil springs all round, new front torque arms, and new BMW battery. Brake fluid change and micro filter service

Yes you get a big cloud of smoke and then it clears until it's left to idle again. Mine would take several minutes of idling then when you pulled away you got the big cloud of smoke. Over the course of about 6-9k miles, it would emit a cloud of smoke after 30 seconds of idling. This may knacker your CATS - so at that point I changed them. Aside from the smoke, it was ok on fast idle test for emissions - so i knew it was just the seals.

Also, there's a fair few for sale that have had the seals done. Why not keep an eye out for one? They command exactly 0% premium over the ones that haven't been done.

I've had my 650i for sale for a while with no serious interest. Had the seals done by a main dealer for £4600! It seems people would rather buy a dog for £5k then spend another £5k on it... bonkers.

I sort of need a car now, this one is local and the next one to come along no doubt will be 200 miles away, if I chip him a but and budget for a repair in the future maybe they may never go? ?? Apart from the obvious how much do they share with the 5 series?

They will go, not a matter of if, and if you're getting a 'bargain' then they've probably already gone. Budget at least a grand for it. Most reputable specialists will be £1.5-£2k, I’d imagine.

Eliot's method is the only way of seeing if they've gone, but some naughty sellers have been known to use 'no smoke oil', so no smoke will appear when revved after idling for a while - buy with caution.

The 6 is essentially an E60 5 series – all major components are shared.

Ok, I'll be careful, if not there is a 335i for sale even closer but I at least have to look at this one

Yeh they will all go, the seals turn rock hard.
Suprised to read that repaired ones dont command any premium - as a repaired one would be a no brainier purchase over an unknown one.
My 750 will return nearly 30mpg on a motorway run - which is pretty good for a 4.8 in a lardy motor.

yeah, after chatting with my mechanic, he recons unless there is any evidence of this job done, walk away, Guys, you were a great help as usual, id have never known about that otherwise. I think I'll leave it, cheers.

it does surprise me that you cant pick them up for peanuts like you can a v8 s4 though as people are put off with the tensioner issue on those, so can only assume its a more known about fault?

When I bought my 750 i searched for e65 common problems and they are generally considered to be ok, especially 2005 facelifts.
When I inspected it did notice it smelt slightly oil and a small puff of smoke - but it only did it once, so i ignored it.
What i should of searched for was n62 (the engine) common faults.

Mines fixed now, it’s a 2005 facelift and misses the hike in car tax by one month - so a relatively cheap car to run.
