Hey everyone, first post here, go easy!

So I'll dive right in. Yesterday I took my bmw, a 2015, 420d m sport convertible f33, to a BMW branded dealership for a scheduled service. It was the cars second service and the current mileage is 34000.

So the car computer told me that I needed a standard service, vehicle check, and engine oil service, adding up to around £250 quid on the bmw site. Oh how wrong the car apparently was. So the BMW rep said as it was the cars second service, i needed an air filter replacement, microfilter, fuel filter, oil filter, fuel hose cla (clamp im guessing?) and an intake silencer service. Adding up to a whopping £600 quid.

So my questions are, should i have taken my car to my local garage which specialise in bmw, mini coopers, vauxhalls and audi's? or did i make the right decision in going directly to BMW? Also can indy garages log the service onto the cars idrive system to maintain the service history for value when selling the car later? Just so I know for next time.

Cheers in advance!

At 3 years old I'm surprised they didn't sting you for brake fluid change too.

Intake silencer service is air filter replacement.
Oil filter is part of oil change.

The extras over and above the standard service are what pays the Service Advisors bonus.

Cheers for the reply. So do you reckon I should've taken it to an indy in the first place? Could the indy stick the service on the idrive?

Independent specialists can log the service on the electronic service book and on the central BMW system if they subscribe to BMWs service.

I always go Indi as in my opinion you get a more honest opinion on requirements and pricing as most smaller buisiness rely a lot on return trade and good old fashion recommendations ok maybe not flashy invoices and book stamping but a decent job
Again In my experience and opinion.

I see I see, alright people, thanks. I think I'll definitely be taking it to indy's from now on I think, as long as they can stick it on the idrive

The second oil service is always the major service - the dealership was correct.

Every other oil service is a major service, the price of which is available on the BMW Service website.

Hey OP. Your post is similar to mine - https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

I've decided to get an oil services carried at at an indy, even though the car is only 18 months old. I'm not interested is going with the cheapest quote but value for money is important, and at the end of the day if you go with an indy you know exactly who's working on your car.

Do check if your indy can log the service on the iDrive though. My chap can't currently but it's on his to do list for the near future. As mentioned on this thread though - https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... - any indy can log a service onto the BMW AOS system and can be retrospectively uploaded to the car.

ALWAYS INDI.

Half the time you will find that the indi know more than the "Specialists" themselves, and will charge you a price that is going to make them money to put food on the table, not a price thats going to make BMW a profit before paying themselves a ridiculous amount. My car had its drivers side window smashed, BMW wanted £100 for the glass and an extra £190 to fit. Indi...? £130 all in.

Hey again, yeah I've decided to go with an Indy. So basically BMW wanted to charge me 600 quid for the full service. An Indy is doing it for £290. So I'm saving 300 quid, I'm happy tbh with you. The labour cost alone at BMW was 270 alone!!!!!!!! Pretty much the cost of the whole bill at my Indy. Ridiculous. And my Indy can log it on the idrive, so I'm happy! Won't be going back to BMW anytime soon, love their cars though.

How do you think they pay for the nice, shiny, fancy showrooms, and the "free" fancy coffee?: Through car sales? - Nope!

The profit margins on car sales are pretty slim - They make their money from the service department.

Parts prices aren't too bad (otherwise the Indy's would be expensive too), but, BMW Dealership labour rates are @ £90 ~£120 per hour now, so if you need 3 hours worth of work doing, that's instantly £270~£360 on the bill for labour alone

Add on VAT at 20% and that adds another £54~£72 to the bill, so you're up to £324~£432.

Parts can easily add £100 ~ £200 to the bill, taking you to £424~£632.

Notice something about your local indy? confused - No fancy showroom!, so lower overheads, hence the cheaper servicing costs.

Yet again, always funny to read complaints about BMW's being expensive to run through BMW dealerships! - As though it's some sort of secret that nobody knew! biggrin
