BMW 520 F10 - Manual Gearbox No Reverse
Discussion
Hi All - First time posting so apologies if this has been covered elsewhere.
So BM been driving great, all normal, when all of a sudden when I went to do a 3 point turn, the car is not engaging in Reverse. I had put it in Reverse only 10minutes before on the same journey. The reverse sensors and lights came on but when trying to force into reverse position it made a grinding noise and resisted to slot in.
Had to push car back to straighten up. All other Gears work fine upto 6spd but just cant reverse? Have been to local garage (reputable and Has BMW experience), who reckons Gearbox is gone and will need replacing, and suggested this is a common issue and expect cost around £2k + for recon gearbox?
Car is 2011 has FSH only done around 87k, is this a common fault? Has anyone any experience of this?
Many thanks

Hi, I had a similar experience with my BMW 520d last year. Got home from work, went to reverse into my drive and couldn't select reverse.
Took it to my regular mechanic and the result was that it needed a new gearbox.
I looked/phoned around and some companies were asking around £900 to repair the gearbox but I managed to find a slightly used (from a similar car that had covered 15000 miles) for £1000. Paid about £500 to replace it (this included a new clutch aswell) and so far so good.
I believe that it is a common problem from the research I done.
