Hi all,

I recently changed my rear shocks due one of it leaking and the mechanic suggested the wheel alignment needs to be since the rear tyre has wear on the inside suggesting wheel alignment issues.

Tyres are decent and have a few 1000 miles left on them, I haven't noticed many issues driving the car. Can I do the wheel alignment now change the tyre later or the wheel should be aligned after changing the rear tyres again?

Any recommendation around Wembley? I had my shocks replaced at carfixgarage, and they suggested its a 3-hour work and would cost 100. I was surprised to know that it would take that long as this is my first car.

A faulty shock can cause abnormal tyre wear. I assume your mechanic ruled that out?

Many tyre places do free alignment checks ; take it along and see what they say. If it’s bad, then there is an argument for doing it sooner than later. Otherwise as your tyres have only a few k left you say , and as alignment can easily be knocked out again , the counter argument is to get it sorted for the new tyres and keep an eye out for uneven wear.

just replacing the shock shouldn't require a check of alignment. The standard 3 series geometry is set up that can cause very severe wear the the very inner edge of the tyre where the treaded area meets the sidewall. I took mine to a place that had a hunter laser 4 wheel alignment kit and asked for the camber to be set neutral (rather than the negative camber BMW set) and my tyre wear has been mint. No noticeable difference to handling either.

just had my four wheels aligned today, I had wear on inside of the rear tyre, down to the material in fact, massively out,I found a groupon deal at ATS for £39 they recommended I change the tyres first as will affect the position of the wheel so I suppose it would give a faulse reading if the tyre isn't evenly worn so that made sense,` so did that in the week. its a different car now, as it happens the front and rear was out (I have E92)

Check the support links/arm bushes and more importantly the spherical lower bush 1st and to check this properly you will need the wheel hanging free and a prybar before resorting to a geo check and adjust that may not be necessary
