Scrap convert fix
Discussion
I've got an old E39 530d estate auto with a buggered box (only reverse no forward) got the oil ect changed a month just to try, still nothing so needs rebuilt. In general it's in bloody good shape inside and out I think it's been garage most or all it's life. It's not a show piece but very nice, anyway..
It'll be £2100+/- for a rebuild or scrap it, convert it to manual
?

Where abouts are you located? The guys at Auto Transmissions in Preston are VERY good and they know these boxes like the back of their hands!
If the E39 touring is in that good a condition, personally I'd be doing my best to save it as there's not many that aren't complete rust buckets!
Re the manual conversion; should be a lot less than your quoted figure!
If not already; get yourself on the BMW 5 forums as there's a wealth of knowledge on there for these: www.forum.bmw5.co.uk

No not stupid at all....yes that's been done too all level ect ect the the box I need is a 5L4E/AS5 (or 5S) 60R or 90R if the 90R then I probably the egs/ecu to go with it as the gear changes might be diffirent but apart from that.
It's hard to find one and believe me I've tried
I'm not that keen in a conversion as I don't theyre ever "right" after it or maybe they are I don't know, bloody big job though and don't know if I could do it. And the guy I use did he'd be a good few 100 in labour alone which after getting the parts might end up being close to 1500...another 5-600 gets it rebuilt.
I really am in a dilemma with this as I don't want to scrap it but might have no option.

a) your posts are repeating themselves; are you using 4G or poor wifi as there must be a delay, or your pressing enter too readily
b) you've 2 posts going at the same time; so stick to replying to this one
Give the lads at autotransmissions a call in Preston: http://automaticgearboxrepairs.com/contact-us Have a natter with them and see what they say; as I said, they know these boxes very well and usually quote very good prices too!
Have you thought about trying to source a working box, eBay, local breakers yards or breakers via the 5 forums?

Dan...yes it's in bloody good nick and yes should be saved i'm south Glasgow so 200ish miles from Preston. I think it'd be about 1000ish to convert. I asked there but hardly any response.
Give these guys a call..top notchhttps://www.mackie-transmission.com/
Running 530d auto cars available for less than a grand.
How much would labour be to swap the gearboxes ?
If it is not too much you could keep the good gearbox and fit the bad box into the the car you bought and then sell it as spares or repair, or just take out the box and then scrap it.
