So in March I swapped the Z4 for a 640D. I have never had a diesel before and the service indicator has me bemused. The car was pre registered in November 2017 and had 20 miles on the clock on delivery to me. The service indicator is showing a requirement in 14000 miles or November 2018, I do not want to compromise the warranty but find it difficult to believe it needs a service within 12 months. Any advice the dealer was vague to say the least.

It is 24 months or every 20,000 miles is the usual estimate bleated about. But I will be honest at least in my experience it is a load of tosh as the oil sensor and other parameters will monitor it degrading.

Mine only got to 13k before it decided it was time for a service, some have had much longer. Since then it has been about every 16k-17k, but it has had an interim oil and filter change every 9-10k between those.

That all said I have never heard of one requesting one so early.

If its a long term "keeper car" then forget main dealer advice and change the oil and filter every 12 months or 10000 miles as a absolute minimum . These are fantastic cars and engines but if left with the old oil in for up to 20000 miles and goodness knows how many cold starts its asking for trouble further down the line . Its actually a easy DIY car as well if you want to do basic servicing yourself .

Also remember it starts counting from the build date rather than the registration date, so if it was built November 2016 that could explain it

Would be worth double checking it doesn't have Service Inclusive, as a lot of dealers now include it by default these days,

Thanks for the advice. All my cars are longterm keepers I had the Z4 13 years and averaged 3000 miles a year as am frequently out of the UK. I guess i'll service it November 2019.

If it does count from the build date it's older than I thought, how can I check?

It does count from the build date - this is how I spotted a 16 plate Mini I viewed a year or so back was infact an early 2015.

The production date should be on or near the tyre pressure sticker in the drivers door opening.

Build date can be found from the many vin decoders online or just ask your BMW dealer for an extract from the Aftersales side (which does give more information as well (note everything in an aftersales portal is pretty much in km not miles which can be confusing).
