2007 1 series with duff engine - what else can be fitted?
Discussion
Possibly buying a 2007 118d, N47 engine with timing chain failure. 11 months MOT and recent new tyres and brakes all round. Very clean car. Cheap enough that we can break it for spares and make a small profit if all else fails.
We will take the top off and assess the damage, bit of luck it'll be repairable (DIY) and the car can go back on the road for a few hundred quid and a few days work. Buying a spare engine would just about work financially, but demand means N47 prices are high.
Wondering if it's possible to take the oily bits and electronics from a running but rusty E46 and drop them in? Obviously not a 5 minute job, but can it be done with off the shelf components?

No, in a word.
Don't bother breaking it either - if it's a cloth trimmed ES/SE/Sport then it's worth bugger all in bits once you've had some valuables from it - injectors, HPFP etc. Panels, trim, lights etc are worth the square root of f
k all. You might drag £500 out of it.
Best plan; clean it up and stick it on Ebay/AT and sell it to some dreamer who thinks he can repair it for 200 quid.
However, it may be worth repairing the engine if it's not destroyed.

Thanks for the reality check.
I did wonder if breaking might not make much money. I guess there are a lot of these being broken, and that keeps parts prices low. Looks like we'd be lucky to cover the cost of the car if we have to break it.
We'll give it a miss, stick to E39s for now. Easy to double your money breaking or fixing these.

We were going to try a rebuild first, depending on the extent of the damage. Too much damage and we'd condider a swap with parts from a rusty E46. Cheap enough if we bought a complete car.
Final idea was to break it, but it looks like we'd lose money on that as it has a cloth interior.
Chap wanted a grand. Got him down to £750, but not worth the risk at that price.

I bought a black 2010 116i 2.0 with the engine in bits in the boot for £350. I think I made 300 quid out of it after a lot of hassle.Final idea was to break it, but it looks like we'd lose money on that as it has a cloth interior.

Really, you want to be paying the same for that. £750 is way, way too much. It's a f
