M140 Shadow Edition
Discussion
I'm giving serious thought to ordering a new M140 Shadow Edition. My local dealer is offering them with almost £8k off list price (BMW and dealer discounts). It is still more than I wanted to spend, but it is the only car that ticks all my boxes; rear wheel drive, 6 cylinder, rear doors with usable rear seats for short journeys, able to carry a bike inside.
If I do buy one, the plan would be to keep it long term, i.e 6+ years.
My concern is that the new 1 series is due next year, so I would be buying something that is already old. However all the rumours are that the new model will be 4 cylinder and 4 wheel drive.
Are BMW offering these deals because it's an old model, or do they always provide huge discounts? Will the last of the small 6 cylinder cars hold their value better than most? Has anyone else recently ordered the old model for similar reasons?

I’m sure I’ve read several threads here about discounts on the M Lites 135 and 140 over the lifetime of this generation, 2012 - 2018 but it would be consistent with other models that, at run out, sizeable discounts are offered.
I thought it was set in stone now that the next 1 series will be 4 cylinder and X drive for the hot version. I’ve certainly seen info on a X2M35i the coupe SUV variant which I assume shares the engine and a lot of other bits.
I doubt you are alone in looking to snap up a M140i for the reasons you have given. If you’re not on babybmw join , they might have into. TRL (Tony Lewis) at Berry BMW Heathrow is a big M Lite seller. He might be worth a quote or at least he (or his threads on babybmw) will confirm what the future 1 is expected to be.

I was pretty much in the same posistion as you earlier in the year and picked up my M140i in June (from Tony Lewis).
I’ve leased my last few cars but with the discounts offered on the M140i I decided to buy it and keep it longer than the previous two year leases. The fact that the new model will be here in 2019 doesn’t bother me as I’ve had plenty of 4 pot hot hatches in the past and this thing’s in a different league!

I was offered 22.5% off a 440i earlier this month, BMW always seem to be pretty generous with their discounts
The replacement for the M140i will be the next generation M135i xDrive, powered by a 4-cylinder 2.0 engine. It's previewed with the recently announced X2 M35i.
I can't see the new model massively knocking back the residuals. If you're keeping it 6 years+ it's always inevitable there will be new releases during that time!
An M240i might be worth considering as that could be a smarter buy if you want something that will be current generation for longer. But then you're kind of just paying more for the same car with a different bodyshell!

Can you spec the Shadow to not have the godawful gloss black alloys and instead the much nicer gunmetal grey ones?
A colleague has a 140i Shadow in black, with black wheels, and black leather. Far too much black.
The standard wheels are orbit grey. The black are a no cost option.A colleague has a 140i Shadow in black, with black wheels, and black leather. Far too much black.

First of all, BMW’s go for the evolutional approach when releasing new models so your one won’t look dated.
Second, even though it will be replaced by no doubt a quicker, more efficient variant, your car will still be a true BMW, longditually mounted straight 6 with RWD.
Third, it’s in a league of its own, every car it competes with bar the RS3 have the same boring 4pot turbo with AWD, including its replacement next year.
I say go for it
I gave in..... I have a test-drive booked for Sunday.
My shortlist of cars is now down to two:
1. A last of the line, best I can find, 130i manual, bought outright with no finance.
2. A new M140i Shadow Edition, part funded with finance.
Basically it has to convince me that it is enough of an improvement to justify the finance commitment.

Even Orbit is a bit too dark, IMO- much prefer Ferric II.

Don't get sucked into the big discount - no one pays full price unless they're niave. My shortlist of cars is now down to two:

But it's the cost to own over a period you need think about. How much would you loose in depreciation + servicing + fixing faults for them? For the 140 you'd need to factor in interest charges vs loss of interest on the 130. Easy

I replaced by 130 with a 135 about 6 years ago now. There was a big difference in refinement and on a day to day basis I'd pick the 135 every time, however for a one off drive it'd be the 130 every time. That engine...
BMW do insane deals on cars that are coming to the end of their run. M3 that my parents run, got an £8k deposit contribution from the dealer, an extra £2k from a deal that was running throughout that franchise of dealers, 0% APR with about £4k or thereabouts down. Ended up being high 500's PM for 4 years, compared to the 340i they had before it which was £8k down from the X3 trade in, 5.2% APR (or it might've been 5.6) and about £1k from the dealer. The 340 was high 400's PM with next to no options on it (Media Pro, Electric Mirrors, M Sport +, brown leather and black wood trim) compared to the M3 CP which was a showroom car with 3 miles on the clock with pretty much every extra on it. DO some research into what deals they're offering, get it in a desirable spec and you should get a hefty discount.
