335i ticking noise
Discussion
Hi there, as the title suggests , my 2007 335i engine is making a ticking noise, I had a look on youtube to see what I could find and saw a vid on there of a guy with the same issue, listening to it the noise sounds identical to mine and it was suggested it was one of the fuel injectors, and establishing that it was an issue, I was curious as to how an injector could make such a sound? cheers
In basic terms an injector is a tube with high pressure fuel supplied to one end, an electrically operated (instantaneously open/closing) valve in the middle and a finely orificed set of holes at the other end to spray fuel into the engine.
The valve part operates VERY quickly & it & its associated parts can wear/lose resilience on their seals etc. this is generally what the noise is.
If you don't have starting/running issues it can likely continue for some time without major problems.
Having said that, depending on the type they can be removed checked & refurbished for a reasonable sum of money.
If you do a bit of googling wrt your local purveyors of this service they will tell you more.

cool very interesting cheers for that, not sure where id look around here, Bristol seems to lack in anything decent in relation to cars, but I'll have a look, prices on new ones seem to vary greatly too, euro car parts want a few hundred quid each, or you can buy a whole set on ebay for around £125, not from china either, but cautious of those. thanks for that though
just curious, after reading your reply again, thinking about it there are no starting issues as such, but unlike most other cars I've owned the engine does take a few turns to fire up and is very lumpy on tick over, a post from an earlier thread I put up suggested the car could do with a walnut blast, which will be done next month and as from the research I've done, this should be carried out every 30-40 thousand miles and my car has done 83k and nothing in the comprehensive history about it being done so I'll get it done as a matter of course. But thinking now that a iffy injector could be causing some of it maybe?
If, (as it sounds) yours is a direct injection engine then yes both could easily be done at the same time & either/both could be contributing factors.
The reason DI engines benefit from walnut blasting is that they don't have the "fuel wash" across the inlet valves that non-DI engines have, so any oil vapours from engine breathers result in oil getting baked onto the top of the inlet valves.
Ensuring your breather system is clean & empty will also help this.

'Ticking' noise was very common with these engines. Mine did it consistently when cold. Occasionally, it persisted when warm, which BMW suggested was due to trapped air around the 'valve lifters', which hopefully makes sense to someone more mechanically minded than me? The dealer advice was that this engine needed to be 'driven'. So a long spirited drive was recommended, which would help push oil through the area and bleed the air out. It seemed to do the trick with mine.
If you are doing low mileage / gentle driving around town, this could well be the issue with your car.

Ok, I'll see if the garage who will be doing the blasting can recon my injectors too, cheers for thatThe reason DI engines benefit from walnut blasting is that they don't have the "fuel wash" across the inlet valves that non-DI engines have, so any oil vapours from engine breathers result in oil getting baked onto the top of the inlet valves.

The piezo injectors in the n54 cannot be refurbed.
I think they can:https://mrinjectoruk.co.uk/BMW-10181010-1353756513...
just curious as to what refurb costs would be (if its possible of course) and what do they cost new for a decent set? my research suggests prices vary widely. Are you being ripped off completely for the expensive ones, or are the cheaper ones cheap because they are crap? also I've seen loads of youtube clips of people replacing them quite straightforwardly, however I saw one clip and someone mentioned about new ones having to be coded? whats that all about?
Last injectors I fitted were gen BMW from carparts4less. I paid approx £120 each. Each time an injector is removed/refitted/replaced you need a new decoupling element which are only available from BMW.
The DME does need the code from a new injector storing in it.
The high pressure injectors do still tick when not faulty so I’d check if they are the cause of your problem before changing them.

excuse my ignorance, whats a decoupling element and whats DNE, sorry this is beyond me lol, so I just cant take one out and pop another in? or even put the same one back without a faf? euro car parts want 300 quid im sure that was for a single injector tooThe DME does need the code from a new injector storing in it.
