Whilst in my local dealer looking at a 435D X-Drive Gran Coupe I spotted a 67 plate 630D X-Drive GT in M-Sport trim across the forecourt, for what I assumed was an incorrect price, £36k! A quick chat with the salesman and he confirmed that residually they are a complete nightmare new (even with the 0%APR offer they are currently running), but after a year or so they level out dramatically.

I enquired further on that specific car. Jan 2018, 8k on the clock, loaded to the eyeballs with kit (Head Up Display, ACC with Lane/Traffic assist, Rear seat TV's, Adaptive LED Icon Headlights, CarPlay, Harman Kardon, Pan Roof, 360 cameras, remote control parking etc etc etc!), list price of £69k, so it's already lost £30k+! yikes On a 4yr PCP they have a GFV of £20k, so effectively funding £16k(plus interest) over 4 years (at £525-£575) a month with nothing down!), which seems remarkable value for a car with that level of kit and comfort! I'm thinking I could run it for a couple of years and then sell for pretty much whatever my finance early settlement amount is.

The 630D seems to be a really good engine with as much grunt & go as 306hp SDV6 engine in my Range Rover Sport (for which I am replacing), and has the toys to match and make it as comfortable motorway cruiser as my RRS is.

So apart from the G32's 'challenging' looks (which I think look great from some angles and not so much from others, but who cares as the smiles will be spent inside the car!), am I missing something here?!? confused

Hi sounds great...interesting your thinking re getting a 4 year pcp and offloading after 2.....from my 4 year pcp experience and chatting to various bmw sales guys negative equity doesnt equalise until around the 3 and a half years at least mark.

Your car with your figures after 2 years still owes £33K.RE Autotrader your year old is worth only what you are paying...and as I realised with a 4 year pcp that 4th year needs a warranty really so more expense for the last year...PCP is the devils finance getting drivers into cars they cant really afford.

My F30 330d with 20% less than the mileage allowance on covered itself with 3 months to go.FWIW I have refinanced as i cant think what is better for me at present

Yeah it was never "sold" new at list price. Bmw list price is a work of pure work of fiction across the whole range the higher up, and more importantly, the less popular the model the bigger the discount to move units...The car never lost the £33,000 quoted.

...If anything I suspect the original sale price was mid to late 40's....

A case in point to illustrate this perfectly and recent is I know someone looking at a 730D, list price with all their options...£82,000. Without even trying they were offered the car at 0% for £54,000....

This is where financed AUC cars start to become problems as in some cases it can be cheaper (depending on finance offers from bmw uk at the prevailing time) to finance a new factory order over the AUC car.

This is why some dealers also have seperate new and used staff (I know of one that at least did have that setup as well). Mine does not luckily...but the reality is overall more merky than clear and you need to have your eyes open to that fact.

Overall my car was similar to the OP but I bought outright without finance. But a 640D GC at the time was regularly 20% off at 0%....77k list up for 47k at 2000 miles and 6 months

Edit finally to add if is from the dealer group I think it is they ordered a shed load of these with huge specs like this. Some were diesel others were petrol models....so their discount could have been even greater....

On the face of it the 630d GT is a good deal if you like the car, but the dealer finance makes it bad deal if the monthly numbers you out up are correct paying around 27k over 4 years for a 36k car that you'll still owe 20k on seems expensive, I'd look to a 3rd party funder or a cash purchase with loan and larger deposit.

Big BMW s can be decent nearly new buys but avoid their finance.

Thanks all. Some good advice.

Having looked on the AUC locator there appears to be cheaper ones with similar spec. With a £20k residual I think circa £32k is the target price for something like this.

Finance, as pointed out, will certainly be funded externally, the example was what the dealer quoted. Having said that they have already been on the phone this morning saying they will go as low as 5.9% on it if I buy. So there’s still plenty of wiggle room and negotiation to come I feel.

Colour choice is very restricted, with Sophistico Grey and Mineral White being favourite. I’m swayed towards mineral which is strange given I’d gone off white cars, it seems to flatter the big lines of it though.

Food for thought, thanks!
