Autotrader madness on E91 330d / 335d
Discussion
Morning All,
I'm after a 330d / 335d, but slightly aware of MPG as I will commute from Plymouth to Portsmouth every weekend.
I have got a 2006 and 2007 E91 330d and has an AVG MPG of 37 mpg and a 08 335d has an avg mpg of 41mpg.
Is this an error in the stats, or was there an engine revision post 08? also the 335d is cheaper to tax???
I know it all comes down to driving style, temp, road type, but the 335d looks more attractive on paper let alone the awesome rep is has!!!

im not upto scratch but wasnt that around the time of the introduction of the STEPAuto on those cars. I think the gearbox change around LCI time.
Also, a lot of the efficient dynamics was introduced than which would make a small difference
Im sure someone more knowledgeable than me will confirm or deny

Firstly, as I am sure you are aware the likelihood of you achieving those figures in the real world is slim to none (check Honest John's for more real world figures) and secondly as the road fund license is based on emissions data from lab tests it is entirely possible that a bigger engine faster car can be less to tax.
For the record, i've had two BMW E91 3.0 diesels.
My driving is about 90% commuting on an 80 mile each way journey consisting of 60 miles of dual carriageway, 3 miles of city, and 15-20 miles of fast-ish A/B roads. I stick to speed limits mostly, cruising at 70-80 on dual carriageways

Cheers PTF,
currently I'm spending £82 on a tank and getting 600 miles per tank from my F11 520d Touring, that's Plymouth to Falmouth and one trip up to Liverpool and back.
I'd rather be in a 330d than a 520d as its a real bore in the 5er. plus parking it is a mare!
Did you have USB in the armrest?

My 09 LCI didn't. It had USB in the glovebox, but that was only useful for transferring music to the pro-nav's hard drive - it couldn't play music directly from it. I think that came a little later. The LCI pro-nav is a massive leap in terms of cabin "feel" over the cars without it, but the difference between LCI and pre-LCI is quite minimal otherwise. TBH the nav/CD unit broke on mine straight out of the dealer and they then spent about £900 replacing/coding it, and the nav was pretty crap compared to a garmin, so next time i'd not bother.Engine wise my preference was always for the M57 over N57 because the internet said it was better.
My current 325d was priced cheaply because it had 155k miles and i went in expecting to have to spend something on it. It's had a new battery (AGM so it was £175!), and it smokes a bit when started from cold so it's had new glowplugs, glowplug controller and i did the thermostats while i was at it to be sure (£200 in parts fitted myself). It still smokes, so next up is to check the injectors (i suspected injectors from day 1 but a garage advised me otherwise!).
I had an E46 320d manual a while ago and my current 325d manual is marginally better on fuel, sounds better, revs better and is smoother.

Have you checked your valve guides? oil could be getting into the cylinders when being left over night?edd344 said:

Yeah the internet suggested that too. It has a general whiff of diesel about it, even when warmed through, just a little bit of a smell going on. But when cold it bloody stinks of it. So my theory is that an injector is leaking into a cylinder overnight, which then takes a few mins to burn away.

Sounds reasonable, keep me posted with your results if you would!Got a leak-off test kit to try
I used to own a 2008 LCI 530d, which averaged 42 mpg. Going from memory, the equivalent 535d was ~ 10-15% worse on mpg.
Pretty sure that a like for like 330 v 335 will see the 330 with the better mpg.
I had my 530d re-mapped which took it to near as damn it 535d figures and improved the mpg slightly, and overall driveability so that is another option worth considering.
