Hi all
Sat on the A42 in my 730d which just cut out then displayed a load of warnings “drivetrain fault” “electrical system fault” loads of electrical warnings.
On the hard shoulder, seems like the battery is dead and wouldn’t restart. Slow cranking, dim lights...eventually wouldn’t crank.
After waiting an hour in the cold I got back in the car and it started back up????!?

Aux belt is ok
I was thinking the alternator was gone but why wouldn’t it start back up after being sat for an hour?
Battery is around 2 years old
Thanks again for any help

Regardless of how old the battery is I’d check it or have it checked.

A low battery will throw up all sorts of fault codes and they don’t need to be too low before they do that.

How old’s the car and what sort of running does it do?

Did you have the battery adaptations reset when the battery replaced? The car will adjust the charging cycle depending on the age of the battery. It will wreck a new battery if the reset isn’t done when you replace it.

Sounds like battery issues to me...

Having just had mine replaced by BMW themselves in my E65 730D, I was having similar issues, albeit on the drive.

No lights, dash was more or less dead apart from temp reading of -50°C, but before that I’d have errorsmflash up re dynamic drive/stability, steering wheel angle sensor etc

It was all down to a duff battery that hadn’t been coded in properly and not wanting to go through this again, I decided to pay the £300 for BMW to fit their correct battery, code it in and check the car over for any electrical gremlins, to which there were none thankfully biggrin

My father in law is having similar issues in his F10 530D, wouldn’t start on the drive and then a few hours later, started with erred flashed up, they cleared and the car drove fine. Next day, same issues again. It’s into BMW next week for disgnostics & a new battery installation etc

If driving and it cut out be more inclined to suspect alt failure , the car stopped because voltage dropped below a useable threshold

It’s a 09 reg f01 730d. Mileage is now at 118k

It’s been solid up until now. I had the battery adaptations reset on it when the new one went in.

Like I said, it lit up like a Christmas tree then died. Wouldn’t lock, lights dim etc all pointing to a dead battery.
But one hour later it restarted!!??

Got it recovered anyway and scanned. Loads of overcharging and under voltage codes. Cleared and haven’t returned. Currently driving the car about waiting for it to happen again. Getting the battery tested Monday.... and was told the alternator is running at 90% load putting out 11-13v by my neighbour with his diag computer

Alternator? Battery? Or something else? Will update when I get some news anyway
Cheers!

Ibs sensors on these can fail and give odd faults.

To me it does sound like battery issues but you need to get the codes read by either BMW or an indy that have the necessary software, not just a simple code reader.

Could be alternator issues as well, but I'd start cheap (battery) and go from there

It should never be running at 11v at any point - that’s not charging. should be above 13.5v at least

Just a follow up. The battery was goosed...and too small. My car has active steering, logic 7 and a whole load of options which require a larger battery than what was fitted to it.

New battery fitted and registered. Problem gone!

Glad to hear you got it sorted; it was the same with my 06 730D!

The guy who I bought it from was told the battery that he had fitted was the right one and was coded to the car; it wasn't, on either case!

It was good to have the right battery fitted and installed, correctly!

Who did yours for you if you don't mind me asking?
