Just wondered if anyone knows roughly how much it would cost to replace a timing belt on an automatic e46 328i? The car is a 2.8 litre S reg.

Timing chain on this isn't it?

Why do you want to change it?

You'd be better off calling a garage rather than asking for guesses online. Labour charges can vary wildly across the country.

It’s an M52 engine, no timing belt, it’s on a chain so won’t need replacing unless it’s gotten slack and there’s chain slap, which is very unusual on these engines.

There are 2 belts for AC and aux, so they should be replaced along with their tensioner, but only if they’re squealing etc...

A few days after I bought the car I had a mechanic plug in a code reader to check for faults and he said one of them was the timing belt.

He's talking ste.

Stay away, find a recommended BMW indy mechanic and get them to check the car over.

However, why did you take it to get the codes read? Are you having issues, or was it a simple peace of mind check over?

Are you sure that's what he said?
What was the number of the fault code?

If he did actually say that then please tell me you didn't pay for that 'advice'?!

Why didn't you ask him, that would be a better idea than asking us, after all he knows how long it will take him & what he charges/hour, we don't.

Ask him surely?

You've wasted half a thread by getting the wrong end of the stick.... Speak to the man doing the job!

Buy the sensor and do it yourself, it's a 5min job, one bolt IIRC and one plug. It's that easy!

Make sure you get a genuine BMW sensor, this is one of the few parts that you need to stick with BMW for and not aftermarket or Eurocarparts and all their cack

However, it's your money and your choice. But don't come crying back when the sensor fails or the engine starts running lumpy/fails to start because you went cheap aftermarket...

My mechanic told me my car was a load of rubbish and I should get rid of it. When I spoke to him again he said he did not recall saying that. He said the ash-tray is full and I should get rid of the rubbish. Anyone know how much that will cost? winkwink

No idea, but you need to find a proper mechanic!
