Bike rack for 5 series saloon
Discussion
I realise this isn't the reply you're after, but having used all three types (roof, tow bar and bootlid), I can highly recommend a tow bar mounted design. Tow bar carriers usually come with a numberplate and full set of lights either side of it, so you're completely legal. Furthermore, with most you can tilt them back to access the boot. I've found that roof bar mounted ones are just awkward to get the bikes on and off, and there's always the risk of scratching the car when you do so - I use my roof bars for boards at least once a week for most of the year and that's easy, but loading bikes on, even on a car with a low roofline like a 3 or 5 series, is an awful lot harder. Lastly, stuff on the roof makes an annoying noise, as do just the roof bars themselves, but bikes on a tow bar carrier can't really be heard.
