My son has managed to lose BOTH sets of keys for his 3 year old 116. The price being quoted by a BMW dealer is £1750+VAT claiming that both the key and the locking system need to be replaced as he has lost both sets of keys!

Does anyone know if this is the case or if someone is trying to rip us off? - I find it hard to believe that BWM can not re program a key off the VIN Number!

From experience of having BMW keys, a dealer should be able to order them in from Germany using the cars VIN number. This may have changed but always was the case. Normally £150 is each.

Google will find you many options (some rather dodgy looking) that are cheaper than letting the BMW dealer replace everything but ...

Your son might learn a very valuable lesson if he has to stump up the full dealer price!

Some insurance policies now have key cover... Worth a check?

He can try another dealer and ask for just one key to be made - obviously not saying he has lost both. Nothing to lose I guess.

That price can't be right! Well 'right' as in ethical.

I'd try a local vehicle locksmith. There's a Polish fella near me who can get any key, for any car, any time. He even got the code for me for my car when I was supplied with the wrong code from the dealer which involved me handing over £20 and him making a phonecall to his mate in Poland. Et voila... I had the code which was something the dealer couldn't do.

My monies on BMW quoting for replacing the entire locking system because it's the only way to guarantee the security of the car from now on.

TBH, if I lost the keys to my car, I would be happier knowing that I had the only set that can operate the car, rather than having one of three keys, the other two of which, could be anybody else's hands.

When I bought my Z4 in 2016 I only got 1 key with it.

Anyway someone on the Z4 Forum cut and coded a flip-style key for me for £80. And while he was coding it he disabled the missing keys, which made me feel much happier!

There is another guy in E. London who does keys and has had a few good reviews - just search "BM Keys".
