Hi guys. First post in a while. My brother in law had a bmw 520d 2011 f10. He moved fron the lights and the car died. Just shut off. He said he tried to start but a transmission fault message came up. He got it towed.
We tried to start it today and it statef battery discharge.. something along those lines.

Tried charging with cables but no luck. It had a particle drive train error before it doed. When you try start with cables it jusr clicks once. There was a knocking noise that got louder over time and when driving it gets more frequent.

Any ideas please? Thanks in advanced.

Have you had the codes read? If not, start there...

After that, if now error codes, start ‘cheap’ and get a new battery and have it coded in (latter part being important). It’s not cheap, unfortunately, but it has to be done properly

These cars can kick up lots of weird/wonderful errors when the battery is low/dead

Thanks for the reply. We had it in to read codes a patricle filter came up and a few others. I have an inkling it could be the chain. Maybe it has snapped? Is that a possibility?

Got to try get it moved but wont even go into nutrul gear. Stuck on park

It could be, they are known for this unfortunately.

If under warranty, it could get fixed but if not, replacement engine or change car... It’s not a cheap fix

Thanks dan. Yeah i saw its like 1.5 to 2k if not more!! No one will buy it like this sadly! Well only for cheap. Got to get it fixed if it is the chain or a new engine. Nothing else he can do! Sad tbh. I have a e92 330d and it runs great.

His is on 154k miles. But then again mines on 168k miles.

Cheers pal. Will need to get it plugged in again i guess
