How difficult is it to replace a camshaft sensor on an e46 328i automatic? Is it a big job and roughly how long would it take a decent mechanic to do? Any idea how much a garage would charge?

Just get a genuine BMW one,IIRC I paid about 80 quid but that's going back a bit. You get 2yr warranty with it. Don't faff about with ebay specials no matter how cheap they are.

This, and this. Genuine BMW, may need to remove the VANOS solenoid, but very easy job.
