Maybe a faulty timing chain.

Sounds like it, how many miles has it done?

The Noise is clearly coming from off side of engine ( driver side ) , where EGR valve , DPF filter and turbo is located , mileage is 130K miles

Eesh... Does sound like a bit like chain slap; similar to the noise you can get with the M62 V8s if/when they go etc...

It needs a proper look over by a decent BMW indy ideally, or BMW themselves if you're brave enough (read deep wallet)!

Don't drive the car until the noise has been properly diagnosed. At the moment you might get away with new chains, sprockets, tensioner and a lot of labour. If the chain breaks it will wreck the engine.

Chain, tensioner(s), sprockets, auxiliaries and get the head checked for valve damage.

That’s a huge bill you are looking at, you can’t just cheapskate it with ‘just’ a chain swap, the damage might already be done.

Why would u be removing the head? There’s no need- engines running fine - just a noisy chain. The chain would not of stretched enough to cause the valves to kiss the piston and still run perfectly.

New chain, tensioners, guides and gaskets definitely, recommend sprockets as worn chains can wear the teeth and create sharp edges that will wear the new chain quicker.

If u get the bits from bmw the it comes with two years warranty on the parts

Thank you very much guys really appreciated .

I have placed order with BMW for upper lower chains , bolts ,sprockets, Guides , tensioners and Gasket as well .

Do u think I should also replace oil pump chain and sprockets for oil pump as in videos I can see 3 chains and they place order for only 2 kits , thanks

For the additional cost, while it's out, I'd probably do the oil pump chain as well. How much is this likely to cost in the end?

A genuine ZF gearbox service kit contains the sump with filter built in, sump bolts and oil.

It’s not hard to change, just make sure whoever does it follows the ZF procedure and has some decent diagnosis software to do the process.

The sump bolts occasionally snap on removal.

Hello been reading up on all the forums as have an x5 40d just purchased from garage. Within a Couple of mins driving started making loud high pitched whistle, took it back they repaired that, told it was a small leak In IC pipe when turbo would kick would make the noise.

Now have taken the car less than 4 days and have this horrible sound also like the one in your video here.

Mine however quietens up when it's warm but still noticible at 1500 rpm when stationary. Car does drive OK tho.

Any ideas or feed back would be appreciated.

Timing chain. Do not drive car. Get it recovered to either dealer if you have warranty or otherwise a good independent. The N57 engine is more common for timing chain issues.
