I just acquired a BMW 420d on 18 plate. I previously had a Audi A5 diesel.

I am finding that the BMW engine is a tad noisier and car feels heavy. Is this common?

I suppose its diffcult to quantify noise or feel as its subjective.

My wife had an X4M for 18 months, I was stunned at how agricultural it was to drive, noisy, wheezy, jerky.

My T6 van drives better laugh

It’s missing 2 cylinders.

2 cylinders missing from a 2018 BMW series 4? Bought from a BMW dealer.

What helix is alluding to is that you may have a 4 cylinder engine rather than a 6 cylinder.

Plus it is a diesel and they are noisy whether it is a 4 or 6 cylinder. I've had a diesel in one form or another since 2006 and the clatter still annoys me, but it does make you really appreciate a petrol though for sure.

Terrible isn’t it! They’re even stealing cylinders from 4 cylinders now, giving you just three!

I have a 330d, can’t hear it to a degree that i would notice. The 4 cyl however are like sewing machines.

I am probably overly harsh on the 6 cylinder to be fair, even in the 6 cylinder ones I've had though...it is the initial moving off stage that I don't like where you can really hear the clatter. The 4 cylinder is a complete dog turd I agree in the same scenario.

Cruising at 70mph both are fine in fairness, it is just at idle and the initial pulling away stage that makes me always prefer a petrol.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Actually, it makes the most noise when setting off. When it gets going it gets fairly quiet.

OP, try BP ultimate for a tank or two’s worth, see if that subdues any noise.

At the first oil change you may add LM ceratec. It helps the engine run smoother and quieter. Especially noticeable on cold starts. I have it in all my cars now with mega mileages, revving freely and effortlessly compared to before. Also the engine breaking effects is lower due to reduced friction within the engine. Can't praise it highly enough. By all means do your research first.
