I've seen a 1 Series 2.0 118d Urban 5dr. I really want the diesel because it's so frugal.

It's 2011 and has 84000 on the clock.

On the other hand I've seen a 2014 1 Series 1.6 116i M Sport with just 37000 miles.

I really don't want the petrol as the road tax is £140 and the fuel costs will be so much higher but obviously I am thinking about the fact it's 3 years newer and it's done almost 50k less.

Both have been exceptionally well maintained and have never failed an MOT, regularly serviced at BMW etc.

For clarity the 2011 is 2nd gen.

Really interested to hear everyone's thoughts?

Have you worked out the difference in fuel costs based on your mileage? If you dont do many miles it might not be that great, especially when you consider potential problems with DPF/EGR etc if you do a lot of short trips?

I often go to and from Scotland and south east England (so 421 miles or something) and do 140 miles a day hence why the diesel appeals to me

This is the info I was keen to know! If I got the garage to replace the timing belt, could it be worth buying then?

It's a chain which is buried at the back of the engine. As far as I'm aware it's an engine out job to replace. I wouldn't bother with it.

140 miles in a day is a lot for a 1-series. We had the previous generation with the sports suspension and it wasn't pleasant for long journeys. Maybe the later gen is better but would have thought a 3-series would be a better place to sit for that length of time?

I don't do this journey every day, I do it between 1 and 3 times per week and it's broken into 2 so 1 and a half hours each way. But yes keen for a smooth ride. I've looked across the BM range and previously was considering mid-sized but I think it's too big for me at this stage.
