Just left the car for a service and have been told I need new brake discs after less than 40K. I am not a hard driver and I have had the car from new.
I never had this with any of my cars, BMW, RR's, Mercs and Porsche have all been ok with discs. Any thoughts or comments if this is ok as the car has just gone past 3 years and wondered if this should be covered under warranty?

Thanks

It can be down to BMW's applying the rear brakes during normal driving for the dsc functions. Have a search and it should have been covered.

I have a 2017 X5 on 21k now and then idrive is showing that rear pads are due for inspection in 30k miles, it will be interesting to see how they have worn.

Frankly the iDrive reading is pretty much irrelevant. My 530 showed about 11k left front and rear after 3 years, about 30k.

When it was serviced at just short of 4 years and 41k the iDrive read 4K left. At that time the pads were about 1/2 worn and the dealer reset the iDrive to 12K. Sold the car soon after so don’t know how it went then.

I had a set of winter tyres and wheels and when I swapped them on or off I used to measure the pad and disc thickness. This was so that I knew were I was and I couldn’t be turned over by the ‘you need new pads and discs’ routine.

The minimum thickness of the discs is stamped on them. The original thickness of them and the front and rear pads is easy to find on the web, so it’s quite straightforward to measure wear and forecast their life.

Imo you’d need to be pushing some to wear them out in 40k, even allowing for the DSC and cruise control (which can be more of a factor than DSC, but only on the rear).

Again imo, you really need to understand yourself how these things are wearing, you can’t rely on the dealer’s integrity. Definitely ask for and verify yourself, the pad and disc thicknesses.

As for getting them done under warranty, good luck with that.

Big heavy car with auto trans, I wouldn't expect them to last much longer than that. I've done 20k in my 2017 X5, and visually looking at my discs, I'll be surprised if mine won't need replacing at the same age/mileage.

Thanks the dealer said this wasn't uncommon but it is for me! Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it.
