As a new owner of an N53 engined 325i (E93) I was interested to know what bits of kit are available for doing the odd bit of DIY diagnostics for when the inevitable money light comes on in these wonderful but trouble prone cars.

Is there a good online resource of specific forum post about what you can buy and where from. I'm aware of things like Carly, INPA and whatnot but it's confusing. I'm not fussed about altering coding functions but if the cars throws an EML or starts running funny it's be handy to have something that'll give me a clue.

I have got a generic bluetooth OBD reader and the torque app.....is that enough?

AN ELM generic reader and the torque app worked for me when I had a 325i (E46) and 335i (E92) ; in both cases same diagnosis as in the case of 335i BMW recovery and the former, a local garage.

If you have a windows laptop kicking around I'd look at a USB cable and disc from Jimmy at Cable shack

https://www.cable-shack.co.uk/

INPA is very easy to use and you can interrogate all the cars modules to see whats going on and monitor stuff in real time. Jimmy can help you get it all installed and set up correctly.

The generic bluetooth reader and Torque will give you the codes and clear the EML, Carly will help you with basic coding and give more fault info than Torque. Carly isn't cheap and is a subscription model now I think, but worth a try. You do need their reader for their software to work properly though I think.
