2004 E46 320D running issue
Discussion
Hi everyone looking for some help please.
My son inherited a 320D last summer, 1 owner from new, 80k, garaged all it's life. Ran fine, sailed through it's MOT in Jan with no advisories, then last week it suddenly lost power on the motorway. He managed to get it home but struggled to get above 1500 rpm.
Last weekend we tried unplugging the MAF and it seems to run a bit better but not much. I didn't expect it to run perfectly with the MAF disconnected so not sure if the MAF is at fault, though it is definitely different without. Today some MAF cleaner arrived in the post and we tried cleaning as per instructions. Test drive tonight and it hasn't really changed, plus the check engine light has stayed on the dash even with MAF connected.
It was last serviced (by us) 4k miles ago and had oil and filter, air filter, pollen filter and some injector cleaner through it - just realised we didn't look at the EGR or the little vortex filter (if that's the right name) on the top - could either cause this?
So, what else can we check or is it likely to just need a new MAF?
Will the check engine light go out itself or need a reset on a computer?
If we need a garage to look at it, any recommendations in North Lincs?
Bit stuck, happy to buy a MAF but want to know this is the issue before spending the money on a genuine one.
Can a remap remove the need for a MAF (seen this on MG's using the M47 R engine) as that is probably the same price as a new MAF?
Thanks

It could be one of a million things - rail pressure sensors, HPFP sensor, turbo (vacuum operated waste gate on 5 speed cars, electronic on 6 speed), underfloor fuel pump, in tank fuel pump, split boost hose.........
You're p1ssing in the wind without a fault code. Specialists in Lincs - Roy Alexander or Geoff Steel Racing are the two I can think of. Both are good.

As I was taught when an apprentice, “test don’t guess”!
Other posters have correctly advised, start with reading fault codes. Don’t bother cleaning the air mass meter, they are self cleaning by design and attempts at cleaning cause more problems than they fix. You can’t remap the air mass meter out.
Check all the boost hoses and vacuum hoses for cracks, perishing etc. It’s worth spending £5 for a length of silicon vacuum hose and changing the lot.
