Hi guys iv been looking into the bmw 330d xdrive and the 335d xdrive they look an awesome bit of kit but is there much difference between the two. Iv heard they both get decent mpg too but is there any need for xdrive Being in Wales when it snows it does tend to get bad so is the xdrive really that help full also iv looked at the 535d but not sure if they do the xdrive. Looking at around the 14-15 year models on all veichles any info on these would be great thanks guys.

Winter tyres for the snow (will be better than AWD on summers).

If the OP were planning to fit winters to a RWD car he’d hopefully apply the same reasoning and fit them on an xDrive car, which would be far better at dealing with any significant snowfall.

I prefer the 35d drivetrain personally - they are both decent but the 35d has always been preferable for its smoother and less laggy power delivery.

The xdrive cars do differ in their suspension setup, even the M sport configuration, apparently the factory setup can feel a bit wallowy but I believe they remedied this to some extend with the facelift but there are aftermarket options also.

My brother ran a 2014 335xd touring for a while, with a DMS map and Birds suspension, it was quite a formidable car and very understated.

I have probably the same 30d engine in an X3 and it's a great engine even in something as unwieldy as an X3. I imagine the 35d is awesome. Depends on your real-world use and whether the VED is different. I imagine the MPG is similar. Might be worth looking for the car with the right options/colours than a 330/335 decision alone?

I live in North Wales, it rarely snows by the coast. I bought an x-drive mainly for the wet traction. I have not got winter tyres, and never needed them in the three winters I have had the car (and I have keep charts). I am looking to go down to 18” wheels, the roads are OK around here, but venture to England, especially villages and B roads in the South-East, and the 19” are too big. I may look at winters next year, just for a change in wheel style? I have yet to find all-season run-flats. I was looking around at the 330d estate a year before, but a 9 mile old, pre-reg 335dx saloon came up at a decent discount. I get 45mpg out of mine.

Post LCI (facelift) the standard suspension is fine, 2014/15 vehicles maybe not so good. Also, I am not sure those have the ZF8 box, if they do, you will not be disappointed. I have done 25k miles, and the tyres will need replacing in the next 4K miles or so.

Hi..realise Wales isnt London but it may be prudent to make sure you get a euro 6 Diesel not a euro 5 re emission penalties now and in the future....my neighbour had a 6 GT series 30d now a 40d ..I said whats the difference engine wise...he said his new car is "fizzier" ...

I’ve got a 435d and test drove the 430d before I bought the 35d. The 30d felt very old school in power delivery, huge thump then tapered off higher up. The 35d engine has a linear pull from low and and doesn’t taper off.

It seems like the 335d seems the one from what people are saying haha I’m thinking xdrive with winters for when the winter comes and then summer tyres for the summer are the engines relibale and what mpg is everyone seeing out of there’s. Only reason I want xdrive is just for the winter as I can’t be stuck with my job haha

Maximum I am no expert on this but all the posts I have seen on BMW Xdrive and snow all say the same thing ,xdrive is irrelevant its all about the tyres IE winter tyres.

Seems MPG is important to you and me which is why although I would like a 335d I will stick with 330d because you can get that without xdrive a heavy draining piece of kit

X35/40d is the much better engine with frankly hardly any difference in mpg (unless xdrive v rwd)

Haha yh I’m quite fussy on mpg it’s mainly as there’s a fairly steep hill by mine and when it’s snows it’s a real issue to get out of that’s the only reason I voted for the xdrive I don’t mind spending money on tyres if they will work and I’m still just uncided it’s been going on for months iv also been looking at a x5 2014 plate 3.0 diesel but the car I’m so unsure about weather I go for the 335d xdrive or non xdrive or the 330d xdrive or non xdrive

I'm running a '17 335D XDrive Sport Touring, currently fitted with winters on 18" Rims, same size tyres front and back.

It's a great car, 26K in the engine is starting to free up. XDrive standard suspension rides higher and has more roll than the 2WD, but even pressing on on country roads it behaves in a very predictable fashion. It's very quick, entirely undramatic and extremely comfortable.

I bough the winters as a wheel package - Pirelli's that are perhaps not the best choice, but I'm in rural Scotland, so they have been needed on several occasions this winter. The power is easily enough to overcome the grip, so 4WD is reassuring.

Once it's time to put the Summer 19's back on, I'll switch them to non run-flat Michelins. I'll be interested to see the difference.

Some people swear by suspension upgrades (I admit the wheel arch gaps with the standard suspension are a bit too big) - I considered it at first, but have now found far better things to spend the money on....

MPG is mid 30's due to country roads and heavyish right foot....

If your quite fussy on mpg don’t get an X5 over a 335dxdrive you’ll cry really cry. Then so much more when you buy winter and summer tyres.

Leithen you have the LCI suspension far better than the floating blancmange of the previous years ,I know as I got rid of my standard suspension 3 weeks in on my 64 plate and it wasnt even xdrive which it seems is worse and thats saying something

OP maybe its because i live in London but a lot of hard earned I dont think should go on Euro 5 diesels maybe stick with newer Euro 6 might save grief going forward with carbon emissions

I run winter wheels / summer wheels as I’ve done with every car I’ve owned. Xdrive or any 4 wheel drive with summer tyres would always come second to a car shod with winter tyres in winter conditions. The main reason I wanted the xdrive is that my previous 330d struggled to put its power down in anything but dry weather. I drive 60/40 town/motorway and my average is 37 (that’s calculated on a brim to brim). Best I’ve had was in a run up north with a full car and packed boot and I managed 43, lowest has 32 (was being somewhat enthusiastic). Given the performance, I’m happy with that!

The 535d is very handy 30-85mph. It’s plenty fast enough for nearly all road users above that - but it’s not a performance car a fast car leaves it for dead utterly.
But it’s a fun car - appears I get better mpg than the lesser 335d and I honestly do not hang about

No launch control - why do people need launch control in a road car?

Standard or low 5’s to 62mph DMs it / other tuners and you’ll get close to 400bhp. As I understand it the 0-100mph off stage 1 Cars is 11 seconds
