Hi,
Just had a new dual mass flywheel and a new clutch put in my car (2013 bmw 530d) is it worth remapping or will it damage the new clutch to mutch? it has 258bhp and 398 lbs/ft of torque stock but only returns 34-38 MPG

Used to be an advocate for remapsv- however I found that cars drove better out the factory than they did with a remap

If the remap is decent it shouldn't murder the clutch.

I would suggest driving style has more impact on clutch wear rather than a remap.

I've just had my Minivan re-mapped and someone else asked the same question about the clutch, as the re-map has more effect within the rev range say at 2000 rpm i can't see as it would cause any harm to the clutch.
For the record I had my Renault Trafic van re-mapped when it was about 6 months old in 2010. The re-map improved the van so much both in smooth take up, economy and overall driving performance that I decide all my vehicles would be re-mapped. The Renault is on 110,000 miles with the original clutch.

Hi
With regards to a remap I have a 330d e90 and have had a remap. It is an auto and I do k ow these handle them better due to the torque being put through the DMF hence why 335d are auto only.
I have heard a lot about manual 330d clutch etc going early due to the torque reason.
A decent remap place will advise and won’t go chasing number but useable and driveable power. You can see a return mpg wise as mine on a run went from 47/48 upto around 55 on same trip and avg up 2/3 however on the other hand if your the person to enjoy the extra power a lot more then it will counteract that. If you plan on keeping the car I’d say now is the best time to do it and place a performance panel filter in there too.

Just because you are having a remap, it doesn't mean you will drive like a loon everywhere, and better low down torque can translate to smoother acceleration without mashing foot to carpet.

So yes higher torque can mean greater clutch stress and wear, but are you driving like that every day?

I had a remap done and the biggest difference was the far smoother acceleration from low revs than standard. Makes it far easier to drive in traffic and the mid range torque band is far wider than before.

Get about 3-4 mpg better around town and 6-8mpg more on the motorway compared to stats before the work was done. Plus it is much faster (240>300BHP upgrade) at medium to high speeds. Acceleration from say 40-80+ is impressive but nearly 450lbs ft torque does that for you.

thanks for the replies everybody the car has done 207344 mileage but had a new engine turbos and dpf at 168k and it is a manual 530 not auto so unsure whether it would do more harm than worth, and just for the record i dont drive like a loon haha! however do open the car up every now and again it was more fuel economy i was looking for with a remap rather than more power, best place i have seen it goes to 310bhp and 650nm torque

Depends how good the torque curve is based on my experience, had an old map on and was very spikey and now on a different map and still running stock clutch 2/3yrs later with 500nm on a 1.9 PD VW lump

Wife had a 535d, I do a lot of my own maps it’s was running 390bhp an nearly 800nm torque. Way above what the torque converters were rated 2008. We sold it 2 years ago after we put 40k on it no issues at all 👍
Difference is night and day after a remap .
Evolve are great Take my M cars there.

Not a huge fan of tuning boxes but they do offer the option of removal as and when required over a remap. Bluetooth app on your phone can change the setting on the move too so you can gain power if you want that extra performance and swap back to stock settings just as easily.

Maybe one of these would suit you.

I put a "Tiger Tuning" box in my Audi 2.0TDI (from ebay) ... 1-8 settings and on 6 it definitely feels better and rides the torque more. Recommended

I will be putting the same brand box in my X3 30D (same engine as yours) at some point, takes 5 minutes to fit and you are off. There was a 14 day return on the product as well, so what have you got to lose ?
