Folks, I'm looking at buying the above X3 model from 2013. However, I have concerns: this is the much lower powered 140 bhp/360 Nm X3, it is also rear-wheel drive only. The particular one I'm looking at is perfect bar the power output; the spec is ideal for me and the interior and exterior are in great condition. My worry is that the above power is simply not sufficient to pull this heavy SUV across motorways and down country roads with ease.

I've spoken with my mechanic who knows a gentleman who can remap the X3 as a "power remap". This would bring the bhp to 181, the torque to 440 Nm and there would be a 10% saving when it comes to fuel usage. To me, who is not a mechanic, this sounds ideal and actually results in the car being slightly more powerful than the 2.0 litre xDrive variant which has the same bhp but would have 40 Nm less than the newly remapped 18d.

My question to you, am I mad or is this completely realistic? Would a power remap of this nature which imo would bring the car to a more optimum power output exacerbate any timing chain/diesel related issues?

Any guidance would be much appreciated.
