Hi I am new ! My clutch on my 58 plate 1 series BMW was playing up. Difficult to engage lower gears on start and a bit sticky at ofher times in other gears. Also occasionally when depressing the clutch to start it wouldn't start the first time (it was like it didn't recognise the clutch as being engaged) but would start second or third attempt of clutch depression. Drove it to get the clutch replaced and all seemed to be going well but then the garage then advised the starter motor needed replacing, then it was the nose cone that needed to be replaced. They replaced these parts and put it all back together and when they started it, it sounds like a sherman tank and they've advised me its the synchromesh in the gearbox and the gear box needs replacing??? Am i being had over? It drove perfectly well with no popping out of gears, no play on the box, no slipping, no butning smell so i was fairly confident it was just the clutch on its way out. Help out a girl would you guys? Feel I am being mugged off by this bunch now!

Faulty synchromesh dont make a car noisy when starting or running it can just make a gear crunch on selection and thats all confused I smell a rat scratchchin tell them if they dont fix what they have broken your going to speak to a solicitor frown and if thats the comment they made regarding said noise then they are cowboys for sure rolleyes

Is it common for the starter to be affected when thr clutch fails to engage? Or has my new starter motor been a waste of money too? Ive gone and collected the old starter motor from them and said i will get it tested as it just doesn't seem right!

When i told them that they advised me the testing process wpuld cost more than just replcing everything?! Given that my car is now in bits i feel kinda over a barrel....basically the car drove their fine and now is broken!

Thanks for your reply so far....

I assume it's a diesel..............?

The starters don't fail that often tbh. If the gearbox/noise issue has started directly after these clowns have had a go, then you need to take it to another garage.

If the car has a dual-mass flywheel and it has failed, the starter could become contaminated by metalic dust.

So this mystery goes on! The garage insisted it was the gearbox so have put a new one in- then called us to say it wasn't the gearbox afterall but had been a fault with the new clutch which was missing a washer of some description! So now theyve put the old gear box back on and replaced the clutxh inder warranty as it was faulty!! After another day its not ready as they are taking their time to bleed it and test drive it!!

Unless they are talking about changing rhe gearbox oil what else could they be bleeding!

Fed up now and concerned about a gearbox coming out, another going in, then coming out and the old one going back in and the potential for damage all of that has caused!

Ive got the old starter motor checked (which they said was faulty and so replaced it!) but no fault can be found!!!! Not totally surprised by that little nugget but now i think I am just gathering evidence to support a small claim against them!

And so pissed off hat the clutch wasn't totally gone and since this garage have had it I am
Concerned my car will come back like some sort of second hand bucket because of what they've done to it!
