Got talking to my brother last night who’s getting his car remapped next week. He was saying about it gives quite a performance boost and also better fuel consumption.
Got me thinking about getting my own car done, he did say because i have a 2018 530d x drive i needed to check if my car had swirl flaps and if so get them removed first.
So thought i would ask on the forum.
Is remapping safe will my car blow up lol ? Does my car have swirl flaps and is it something i should get removed? And is there any other things i should consider before getting this done ?

Been watching a bunch of videos and read a bit today about remapping and tuning boxes. So i think a tuning box is definitely what i will go for just wanted to ask has anyone bought one from tdi tuning and if so how did you like it ? Been watching a few of there videos and thinking about getting one from them.

Not sure about the G series ZF boxes but I heard that the 8 speed in the F series 30d’s can’t take more than 500lbft so take note of that.

I have a 430d and have thought about remapping it a few times but it voids my warranty and I’m not taking that kind of risk on a 20 grand car!

BMW do offer power kits but they’re very expensive at 1200 quid fitted with modest gains so I decided to leave it!

Yea its the warranty thing that put me off remapping because i read its traceable even after being removed but the tuning boxes as far as I’m aware are completely untraceable after being unplugged. Going to give tdi tuning a go boxes are only £470 and they fit it for you so after my first service next week ill deive to there Manchester branch and give it a go

Let me know how it goes, if they can’t trace it, I might go for one too!

You're golng to put a random generic tuning box onto what is a £40k car. Sorry, but that sounds like a crazy idea to me. If you are going to do something and don't go for BMW approved then go to someone like BW Chiptune who have a great name for tuning BMWs. At least then you will get a map that is specific to your car.

I was under the impression tdi tuning specialised in bmw ? Also been told nothing can really damage the car but going by your reply i am guessing it can do some serious damage?

There are plenty of experts out there, of which I am not one - however. A tuning box sold by the thousand and fitted to your car is not specific to your car. It is a generic piece of equipment. On a car with significant value I would want a reputable tuner (such as Jason from BW Chiptune) to create a map specific to my vehicles parameters. I would consider this to be a much safer option. I don't have my 435d mapped, but I will when I get bored of the current performance, or I fancy a change. At that point I would use someone like Jason to do the work.

Personally I would prefer to pay slightly more for something safe (er). But you pays ya money, you takes ya chance.

I agree, I would go with a bespoke map from a respected tuner (BWChiptune, DMS etc.,etc) rather than some generic tuning box.

However, I wouldn't touch either with a bargepole while the car is under BMW warranty, far too much at risk on such an expensive car, as I've seen a number of people I know get into a right expensive pickle with Audi, VW and BMW dealers on still under warranty cars that they've had re-mapped.

just to add my 2p to the tuning / re mapping discussion;
I went with a Generic 'box' for our new X5 40D - Chip Express
easy to self install, and has varying power settings - I obviously went for the highest straight away ! smile
Nearly 20K miles of driving with it and not a single hiccup.
Definitely quicker than std too (309bhp to 372 bhp, 630NM to 794NM !) - 3 year warranty, and circa £350 from memory.

Other end of the scale I've had my Panamera Turbo S remapped (and a few other bits of hardware changed) by DMS - significantly more cost / power, but boy does it fly !

Tempted to get the 991 GT3 remapped for the hell of it....

3 year warranty on what? Can the ZF8 cope with 794 Nm? Remember, unlike power which will arrive only at higher revs, the torque will be used much more often (dial up the performance indicators to see how often the torque reaches high up the dial - very often)

Probably, just..........but given its serviceability torque capacity is 750 Nm I think I'd be taking it back to the mapping place for a revised map.

The tuning box itself isn’t traceable but the fact that your car will have been running a much higher than factory fuel rail pressure will be.

enlighten me - how does the car store historic data from fuel rail pressure?

I’m not sure about that but I read somewhere (could be waffle) that if you crash a modern BMW, the car will automatically collect all the data of the speeds/revs before impact, I think it was in the M2 crash thread.

If that’s true, then if a major component fails on a modern BMW, I’m fairly certain BMW will have some sort of system in place to save data such has fuel rail pressure to find out why it happened and how to prevent it etc.
