Hi all,

Forewarning: This is my first BMW & my first car with parking sensors.

The car is only 7 weeks old (2018) & has only 1100 miles on the cock - so fairly new.

When i reversed (happened twice now on a sunny day & a rainy day) the sensors picked up something that wasn't there & stopped the car abruptly.

1. Should it stop it like that? I guess it is normal?
2. what could be the reason? Anyway i could check? Dont want to do a long journey to the dealer if i can avoid it.

Any help is appreciated.
Many thanks

My hunch is you've got more than just parking sensors (PDC), maybe some advance park assist that applies brakes to avoid impact.
Normal PDC can play up if sensors are wet, dirty etc. Possibly this is the case, but the outcome more noticeable?
In your position I'd familiarize myself with the system, clean any sensors if applicable and if no result then contact dealer. I don't believe you have to attend, I think via connected drive they may be able to diagnose remotely or if not the dealer BMW assistance.

Agree, that is not normal parking sensors. It will be something like ‘active parking sensor’ or ‘transverse pedestrian movement’ or similar. Try a test with a (gullible?) colleague walking across behind you. Or even read the handbook - yes, a novel idea for some.

Here you are:

https://www.bmwux.com/bmw-performance-technology/b...

“Active Park Distance Control as Part of the BMW Parking Assistant. The Park Distance Control provides automatic braking as an emergency precaution. The system takes over and applies brakes when a possible collision in the rear is detected during reverse operations carried out by the driver.”

You may be able to switch it off via iDrive.

I just have the Park Distance Control on my 335d (i.e. driver is responsibly for stopping the car).

It's not the electric handbrake "grabbing" as you slow down is it?
Try taking the autohold off when reserving.

Like the previous poster said

Turn off the auto hold function for the handbrake....problem solved it seems

My car does this, its as if its too keen to apply the handbrake,my previous car did not have this issue when I selected auto hold.

I think it is a fault that will need a software update

Thanks to all those who responded.

Had a look at the manual. (Agreed, this should have been my first action wink )

The car does have "Active PDC with emergency breaking function". So this is why it stops the car.

The issue is, there was no apparent dirt on the sensors & there were no obstructions (at the time) close to the car for it to behave in this way.

I was reversing out of my driveway. So i didn't engage auto parking or Auto hold on the hand break.

This is still a mystery to me...

If you were reversing out of driveway, it may have been alerted by the proximity of gateposts. As I said, try a few tests with a colleague, or cones to determine what it is that triggers it.

My mother in law has something similar on her Jeep, she lets it stop itself rather than using the brake. Makes a nice smooth experience... :/
Is your drive on a slope? That makes my sensors go off.

My X3 M40i (6 months old) has done this a couple of times too - makes a noise like you've hit something but it's just grabbing the brakes to prevent you having an accident. Admittedly in my case one accident was a bush about 2 feet away (i was reversing slowly!) but the other time it was just air, i couldn't find any reason for the sudden stop.
Don't worry, you and i are not alone, a few people have reported similar issues when (for example) driving into or reversing out of a steep driveway. The protective systems are perhaps a little too protective at times.
