i3 Range Extender
Discussion
Possibly thinking of getting one for my wife. She mostly does short journeys, so ideal for that, but occasionally has to drive about 150 miles each way, with very limited chance to plug in. Is it possible just to keep going on the range extender engine / low battery charge for 100 miles or so?
Yes. I would think she'll need to start the journey with a full tank (10 litres) and possibly have to refill twice enroute depending upon weather and road speeds. Some planning of the fuel stops will be needed but it can be done without too much aggro. Not the ideal use scenario for a Rex but if it's more the exception than the rule then no worries at all.
You probably will get on better with the EV forum. There is a long i3 thread there and many owners.
I had a battery-only i3 for some time. Good cars if you can handle the quirks (eg the rear doors in confined places). Good but not great for longer motorway trips. Fantastic in town.
As said, the only compromise is you'll have to accept refilling quite often. However most owners rarely use the range extender.
