340i MPPSK experiences?
Discussion
Got mine fitted in December last year.

Generally very happy with it (although my neighbours probably not so much). Makes it a lot more fun to drive in comfort and sports modes, especially in combination with M/pilot sport 4S. The MPG is a bit worse in traffic and in low speeds (and/or spirited driving), on the motorway it's gone from 34mpg down to 30/31mpg, in mixed driving it's not a huge difference than before.
After a first month it developed a loud metallic clanging noise at lower speeds, which sounded like loose tent poles rattling around inside the exhaust. It was most noticeable (and embarrassing) in multi story car parks where it reverberated around. It didn't affect performance and you could still use the different modes (eco-sport+) assumed was an issue with the values being loose.
Got it looked at under warranty at the start of the month. They acknowledged the noise, but said they didn't know what was causing and there was no official fix from BMW and they'd ask for advice, yet when I drove away it had stopped, so whatever they did do stopped it.
The earlier versions of MPPSK (as you'll find on Youtube) made the infamous shot gun sounds on over-run and lift off, which was coded out of the map in later models of which mine was one. And the day I drove it away and for abut a week after it was doing that, it was quite funny even lifting off on the motorway if someone pulled out in front of me would generate a string of loud pops and bangs, as would dropping down through the gears as you slowed, especially at or or above the 4k rev range. It would also make a loud DSG fart style noise as you upshift, even at lower speeds and revs, but particularly over 4k. So potentially they just put the original map on it, I've asked for confirmation but still not had.
What is strange now is that the characteristics seem to change. Today I drove it for about 30 miles in comfort mode from cold and had a little stretch of S+ near the end and it was popping and banging as usual. Then I stopped and turned engine off for 20 mins or so. When I got back in, it was much quieter. No popping on the upshifts at low speeds and little over run sounds. I'm not overly fussed about the sounds, it's actually quite embarrassing on the over run sometimes, especially in tunnels as it literally sounds like a weapon. But I am curious as to why it might be inconsistent and what other peoples experience is.
Could this be to do with engine temps/outside conditions or could it be a software/hardware issue?
Wondered how other people get on with it, had any problems?

I had mine fitted about 2 months ago and think it is incredible.. Luckily I don't do early starts in my car as I have my van but really don't think it would be a problem in comfort mode anyway, Mine does the gunshots occasionally but it has to be provoked... It certainly transforms the car with the extra HP and Torque is pretty noticeable, Can't say I pay too much attention to MPG so I haven't really noticed any difference in that department.
I would say it is probably the best AUC modification you could to the 340 as I very much doubt you will be able to get anything like this in the near future, In fact any 340 / 440 built after June 18 cannot have the MPPSK fitted due to emissions / filters fitted to the newer cars.
The 340 is an exciting car to drive as standard with the MPPSK it becomes a total animal when you are in the mood and put it into Sport / Sport +.
Overall I really love the car.

I have a 340 xDrive Touring with the MPPSK. The dealer I got the car from had a 340 Touring demonstrator with, and one without and the difference was enough that I had it fitted before delivery. I doubt I would have got a 340 if it wasn't available (I was comparing it to an Alpina B3s, 540 or E400 / E43). During the last few months MPPSK was a factory option here in Switzerland.
I got it for the performance, especially the torque, and sometimes (cruising on the motorway) I do find it a bit droney. On the passes especially I'd like an option to keep the valves closed but with the drivetrain / suspension in Sport. I'm often driving in the early hours and it is a bit antisocial, especially when going through small villages. I spend most time in Comfort apart from when I need the suspension stiffer.
We have the big sunroof and live in the Alps so most drives involve going over passes / through mountain tunnels. The children love the sound in the tunnels with the sunroof open. I think the pops depend on exhaust temperature but also don't understand why it's there sometimes and not others.
I will be interested in how the new M340 is compared to my car - the numbers with xDrive seem very similar.
Still not sure whether I made the right choice. The Alpina was the one which pulled at the heart, the others would have been better on the motorway which is where I spend a lot of km. Given my 13 year old son is coming up to 175cm I suspect the next car will be the next size up.

Mine was fitted november but it's always sounded the same. Comfort is quitier (about as loud as 'sport' was before the kit) and sport is much louder. Lots of pops and gargling, farts on up shift etc and if provoked some gunshots.
I was told by a BMW tech that getting the exhaust on without knocking can be tricky and often takes a couple of attempts but thankfully mine has been perfect.
I have noticed the gunshots and bangs are a bit louder if the exhaust is proper hot.

Hi all
I am looking to buy a 340i and am looking out for ones with MPPSK and there are very few. Some BMW dealers haven’t even heard about it.
Was the MPPSK an option from factory? Can it be retrofitted at a normal BMW dealer and what sort of price are we looking at?
Many thanks
David
Hi David, you've probably already seen it if you've been looking on the classifieds here and on Autotrader, but just to mention that my 2016 touring with MPPSK fitted is currently for sale... drop me a message if you're interested I am looking to buy a 340i and am looking out for ones with MPPSK and there are very few. Hi, I’m looking at getting this fitted as all reviews seem pretty good. Why is the cost down at half the price it used to be? Any thoughts on mpg and does it do anything to insurance costs?
It's the usual BMW story, large RRP with big old discounts. I guess they get a few suckers paying full whack so it's worth it. I bought mine in 2018 for £1250, then £200 to fit it at a local dealer. MPG wise it's the same as before tbh, drive sensibly and it'll still return excellent economy but obviosuly if you make use of the power it'll drink. The first few weeks you'll find yourself just making noise for the sake of it and using lots of fuel.
Insurance will be pretty specific to you and your 'risk profile' but for me now, I'm not paying much more than a stock car to insure with the MPPSK and coilovers fitted to mine.
Mine is a 2016 440i f36 so plenty of pops and bangs with mppsk

Had the rattle you describe once when I switched off the engine and immediately on. Disappeared after cold start and haven't had it since.
Looking into getting a downpipe but unsure of going for 200 or 300 cell. Not sure how loud they are with mppsk vs standard
