Hi guys I’m looking at getting either a 335d xdrive/ 435d xdrive or a 535d does anyone recommend the best place or tuning boxes to have on there cars. I had a test of my friends 640d and loved it loved the power coming from a 170bhp merc haha. Also what would you guys pick if you where in my situation I do mostly town driving and couple of times a week a 40 mile run. The only thing that put my off the 640 was the sheer size of the thing 😂 and not a lot of room in the back or front haha.

I'd suggest not getting a diesel if that's your driving type.. you'll kill the car in no time..buy a 320i with the turbo lump.. derv have got over 300hp out of those

I'd get the 640d. Extra power on tap, no real need for a remap in those. They are amazing cars, compared to an equivalent 335d they are amazing value for money. Real fun to drive too.

Looks like they do. Thought that the 335d had 285hp and the 640d had 310hp but they're both the same engine now. If so, I still wouldn't need a remap as they are very well suited to the 8 speed auto and give impressive range as well. 6 series is much better value for money, there are 335d's that are out there with cloth seats.

You seem to be ignoring the fact being pointed out to you above that a diesel is NOT the right engine for you doing those miles.

It WILL cost you a fortune over an equivalent petrol engine car.

Why are you even considering a diesel at that mileage? You don’t mention a budget (or requirements) - 3, 4, 5 and 6 mentioned?

Six series represents outstanding value for money used.

Not sure I’d be looking at diesel either with the mileage that you do because you’ll more than likely be asking for trouble at some point.

The 6 series is fantastic value second hand; they’re a lot of car for the mo day but they’re huge. I thought about one, but decided hat it was a bit big (wide) living in the middle of nowhere with some very narrow lanes.

The 335d is a good car but I wasn’t a fan of the suspension - they come with the SE set up and it wallowsa bit and has a funny floaty feeling at speed. Quick though.

The 140 is a cracking little car, but whilst capable of impressive economy, I’d imagine that you’d see lowish consumption given you’re mileage.

On that journey profile, you'll probably find the M140i will use less fuel than the 335d or 640d.

As others have said, the diesel is definately NOT the right choice for the mileage and use you do!!

Mine's averaging 29mpg despite having a very short-journey-biased life. Can do 45+ on a run too.
if you take into account the inevitable borkage caused by driving modern diesels short distances very regularly I'm pretty sure it works out much cheaper to run the petrol that way.

By the looks of it, if it's less than 12K a year it's not worth the possible hassle of a diesel. I recommend a 335i or a 640i, personally the 640i would be for me. N55 generally unproblematic compared to its predecessor.

If you do go Diesel it may be prudent to make sure the engine is euro 6 which I think starts sept 15 with BMWs (needs confirming)

ahh right okay a few people have said about the 640d being a mice motor but with my type of driving will it be too much of a heavy lump for short journeys

640d is a great car for you then. 45-50mpg on the motorway if driven carefully without too much throttle. Very good range out of an 80L tank, around 550-600 miles. No real issues to report either, other than standard DPF stuff etc. that applies to all diesels.

Nothing to with heavy....?

Its the frequency of the short journeys that makes any diesel engine car a poor choice for you.
