Stopped at some lights today and I heard the warning sound from the car. Looking at the dashboard the square surrounding the gear indicator light was flashing. Car in drive at the time. Sound lasted approx 3 seconds and then the light stopped flashing and car drove away normally. Any ideas?

Car is a 3 year old X3 335D.

Thanks

Hi pica-pica, yes I've looked at the handbook and done the old google search which suggested anything from low battery to catastrophic gear box failure (3 year old car, 29k on the clock).

Maybe you pushed the P button, and then did not press the side gear lever button before attempting to move to D? I cannot remember but I believe you can push the lever into Neutral, but cannot move from N to D without foot on foot brake and/or pushing the side button.

To me it sounds like a gear state inhibitor was in place. Try and replicate it, and come back here.

Hi

I've tried to replicate the problem with no luck.

Charlie you may be right about the battery but the stop / start is working ok even with a load on the engine (lights on and heated seats on).

Just a follow up. Car's been into BMW for a diagnostic, nothing found not even a fault code. They're reset the gearbox and told me to key an eye on it!
