Bmw m3/m4 - any dog owners?!
Discussion
Getting tired of a lack of options for decent estates that have manual gearbox.... Starting to seriously consider a less practical option with roofbox etc etc... But has anyone got experience of having a big dog (in my instance a Boxer) and a coupe or saloon?
Currently in a fast but dull RS6.
Why the hell won't BMW build a bloody M3 Touring?
Yours sadly,

I was in the same situation as you with a Weimaraner (36 kg) and it has been the bane of my car ownership history for the last 3 years.
Gone from an X3 to an E92 M3, to an A6 Avant, to an F10 M5 to an X5, to an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, to my current F31 335D.
My dog, who is very calm when in a car, resided in the backseat with a full Rhino cover but this means the car is rendered a 2 seater, and to be honest, not perfectly safe in an emergency braking.
After 6 months, I was always fed up with it, and you really don’t want to put a wet and muddy dog in the backseat, in a nice car, so I changed back to a practical (A6, X5, F31) each time.
If you do go down the route of an M car, then go M3, impossible and hugely impractical to transport a large dog in a 2 door car. But if I were you I would keep the RS6, it is the best compromise as a dog owner.

Is a 2nd car an option?
I bought a 2003 Mazda B2500 (re badged Ford Ranger pick up basically) for £1,200 then got a truckman box off ebay for it for £200. It get used for my 71kg Dogue DeBordeaux, tip runs and last weekend what felt like a million bags of sand for my brothers patio. Was also a "win" in the couple of days snow we had All keeping the interior nice and tidy.
It's not gonna win any races but is very dog friendly.

Not an M3/4 (unfortunately), but when I first got my lurcher I had a saloon (MG ZT).
Initially he was small enough to fit in footwell with his head on the seat (which was both cosy and adorable), but very quickly this became impractical. Getting him on the back seat was difficult as he likes to stand and it's very difficult to stand on a back seat as they aren't flat, or that deep. I went for the front seat and used my wifes Golf where possible.
I now have a greyhound, too, and there's no way he'd ever of fitted.
I bought a hatchback (RenaultSport Megane) and they (both) fit ok. I've basically written off coupe / saloons as daily drivers forever!

Cheers for ideas re cheap pickup and making Floyd (said Boxer) drive but I suspect the best option is to bite the bullet and get something Caterham shaped for the fun roads.
One car in this instance is just unlikely to suit all jobs, no matter how good they are, it's a compromise, I just didn't fancy the rigmarole of another insurance/tax/not headache again.
Balls.

Non Bavarian opinion: XF Sportbrake 5.0 V8 Supercharged, but only two available on AT. Being the facelift and estate they are very good reliability wise.
