I'm a BMW guy, been looking to purchase an M3, but waiting for the new model year to come out. A buddy of mine just got the Tesla model S. The technology is amazing, the dash superb. My wife who is in the tech industry is raving to get one. She drives an x3 msport which is 2 years old. Although the m3 is awesome, I keep coming back myself to how advanced the Tesla is. I know they're different cars, but how to convince my wife that we should get the m3 and not the Tesla?

I guess its about the enjoyment you can see in driving. Ask yourself what do you actually enjoy about driving.

If a traffic light GP is what you want then the tesla. If high tech Gizmology is what you want then the tesla

If a decent engine sound to interact with is what you want then the list of cars is getting smaller and smaller but are all ICE. The M3 isn't one of them though

If you like the interaction with an engine, gear changing, making sure right revs for right occasion then ICE but don't bother with flappy paddles.

Just pick what you would have the most fun in, because speed means nothing in these days of officious police and draconian limit with an overpopulated country.

I hate to say it but I'd go Tesla. Never shown any interest in Hybrids or EVs before but since the wife got her i8 I'm addicted. That torque is unreal. It replaced her M4 CP and she absolutely loves it. When I get back into any of our other cars the engines now feel archaic. A strange feeling and hadn't experienced it before. Went in a 100d not so long ago and can see why even true PHs are making the change.

Also depends on your use of the car - how many long journeys do you do?

Why do you rarely see a Tesla keeping up with faster traffic in outside lane of motorway - always seem to be doing 60 mph in the middle lane. I suspect it’s battery preservation.

I really like the idea of the Tesla and have test driven one. I will no doubt own one or a competitor at some point but my thinking is that they still need further development and better infrastructure to be a viable alternative for my current driving needs.

THIS!!! ive never seen one rip one down the motorway and there are a few my way, either they are twindling doing 60mph on the MW or being charged up

Also if you are going to spend X amount on a tesla you might as well wait for the porache taycam thingy.

.
I have seen Teslas in the outside lane at over 70 on many, many occasions. In Fact I don’t recall seeing one doing anything other than overtaking on the m-way. I have an iPace though so I probably will have to go gently to get anywhere a long way away (not that I do many long journeys). I was sold on the iPace when I did the iPace event at oulton park - flat out round the circuit a few times, amazing grip and poise in the slalom...
