Hi all,

M54 equipped 330 started running rough the other day with an engine light.

Codes:
7B Activation, map cooling
E3 Fuel trim bank 1, permissible range exceeded
E4 Fuel trim bank 2, permissible range exceeded

A quick google showed most likely culprit was an air leak, and sure enough I found a split in the hose after the MAF.

Once replaced, however, the codes persisted, but accompanied by 4 misfires on different cylinders.

Feel like death at the moment but next move is to and spray it with carb cleaner and see if I can track down the leak, and dismantle and reassemble the intake pipework.

Any other suggestions? CCV? MAF? DISA? Rocker cover gasket (was done in the last year, no oil smell any more) Don't really want to throw money at parts without a clear idea of what's what, so any other ideas.

Also, there is a little plastic grille of concentric circles that sits behind the MAF that seems to have disintegrated but I guess this is not essential.

A bit annoyed about the map cooling error - I understand this is the thermostat which was replaced a year or so ago to cure the same error...

Update - just had a poke around, soaked the whole area in carb cleaner without any consistent results - unplugged the MAF and it ran much better. Not sure if this points to anything in particular as I am assuming it has a default setting as it doesn't know how much air is going in. Might dismantle and inspect the DISA tomorrow.

The fastest way to troubleshoot is to do a smoke test. On mine it was a combination of a broken breather pipe, flat DISA seal, missing plug at the back of the manifold (perished) and cracked valve cover (fixed with epoxy glue).

Post up a pic of the MAF sounds like it may be after-market if its breaking up and they are junk anyway frown metering incoming air is critical for correct operation of the fuel system cheap/pattern MAF's that dont scale correctly are just asking for trouble

That would be leading me to change the MAF (as above) use only genuine, the aftermarket ones are cr@p.

Fit a genuine BMW MAF, as others have said, aftermarket ones are stty at best.

Get the DISA rebuild kit from X8R on eBay, c£60. Takes 30mins to remove, dismantle, rebuild and refit wink Worth doing as it’ll never need doing again.

Also make sure that your air intake boot from MAF to throttle body isn’t split anywhere; these are known culprits, so worth checking and replacing if necessary (the Febi parts via BMWmotormec on eBay are more than sufficient)

Do you have the actual DTC numbers available? It does sound like a lean running air leak problem but would be nice to clarify.

I also have an E46 330i that has flagged a MIL, albeit tied to P0171 + P0174 which suggests an air leak.

There's a guy on YouTube who seems to know his stuff about these engines, has literally dozens of useful how to guides, and one for air leaks that may help you chase down the culprit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3encrkBsss0

The jist of it, check all rubber air and oil vapour hoses tied to the inlet manifold.

Also if your MAF isn't an OEM Siemen's unit change it regardless, and as has also been suggest get the XR8 DISA rebuild kit.

Those are the codes my Creator C110 gave me, will try my generic OBDII later (although I have reset the codes so will have to go for a drive to get them to pop up again).

No writing on the MAF as far as I can see, picture here:

Look inside at the bit of plastic left - got most of it out, hoping the rest didn't end up going into the engine but who knows!?

Going to go out and pull off the DISA for a look and to get a closer look at the lower hose...

PS - about the DISA, I understand there's no O-ring but if you pull it off you need to scrape out the sealant and fit an O-ring. Where do you get from?

Here's the How To from X8R: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIq7QJpRnRw

Get their kit and do the whole job, the O ring just sits between the DISA and IM; so no need to scrape anything smile

IIRC that's not an OEM MAF; so get one as soon as you're able too.. Plus if that's your intake boot; that needs replacing ASAP too, that's hell of a split!

MAF should be Siemen's and part numbers on it

Have you checked the air intake boot that connects that section to the TB; they're ridged and they crack in between the ridges or at the TB connection; so check there if not done already (best to remove it all and look at it all properly really)

But my main guess would be a crap MAF

You need to srape out the old flattened orange seal.

Thanks all. Not checked lower boot, all but inaccessible with the DISA in place. Going out after lunch to pull it all apart and inspect. If I establish the MAF is aftermarket or everything else is OK I will replace, but don't want to pay £200 or so if that's not the fault (my e36 just cost me a grand!)

Exactly this. Don't mess with the orange seal with is part of the valve operation. You need a new black o ring else there's a good chance of a leak if trying to use sealant

Righty-ho.

Just pulled all the intake pipework out - couldn't see any more splits and it all seemed well put together. Inspected the lower air hose and it seemed ok as far as I could tell without taking it off, although it was problematic to get to. I suppose they're cheap so I might order a new one.

MAF is Siemens branded 5Wk9 6132 / 1 438 871 / PBT-GF30 which as far as I can tell is genuine BMW. Looks intact apart from the "sniper sight" grille which I assume is just to protect the element.

Interesting pulling the DISA - the steel pin was half out and the flap was not lined up with the white plastic part broken, so safe to say that is knackered and possibly I have dodged a bullet with the engine ingesting bits of it. Question is, do I rebuild for £65 with better parts or buy a new one for £130 or so which means I don't have to worry about knackered diaphragms, electricals, etc.

As removed:

And, would this being knackered cause the symptoms I have seen or is it likely to be something else?

Rebuild with the X8R kit pal, it's fool proof.

As long as the diaphragm works, it's very saveable.

FYI a new OEM DISA is c£260! Again, aftermarket ones are a no no
