Visiting my local dealership today and they had a lovely range of the latest cars, spoilt totally by the ridiculously oversized comedy grills, It can’t just be me that thinks this.

Seriously, who signed this off.

The Chinese market demands them apparently. Afraid I haven’t got any grille jokes.

I read the thread on here about the seven. I thought it didn't look "that" bad in the press release pics, a bit gaudy but not as bad as people were making it out to be.

That all changed on my way home last week, sat at a traffic light, waiting at the set across from me, a new 7 series. I actually laughed out loud, it looks fking ridiculous. You can't believe it left the factory looking that way.

But I kinda liked it, in a weirdo batst way. I bet it moves people from the outside lane. I know I'd move over seeing that monolithic Bavarian plastique looming up in the rear view. Even at 100 metres, the size of the grill would make the car appear to be 2" off your bumper. biggrin

Additionally they are now a single piece grill...not separate.

The 7 LCI I just don't know what to say any more. I already thought the pre LCI were a little large but I like inside the 7.

I think "part" of the issue for BMW is they wanted to get rid of the hard shut line that most of the F series cars had between the bumper and bonnet. To do that the bonnet needed to be more clamshell like. Easy solution was to increase the grill size.

But the new LCI 7 takes it to comedy levels.

Having seen one in person I was just not quite sure...

I think it's the old grill versus grille joke, the former being something to cook on, the latter to adorn the front of your car.

Anyhow, having now seen a new 7 in the metal, I quite like it. I don't think they had me (or anyone in Europe) in mind when they designed this, but it's certainly a discussion point.

Looks bloody awful to me. More comedy than purposeful.

Suits the american market I suspect, for brash chrome things - not so sure it looks right over here.

...they are probably for the the Chinese and middle eastern markets where bling and impact is more important than taste ...

...plus they are preparing for the real change for next year... wink

They look ridiculous; too big, too in your face and very very chintzy. And people agree the Bangle era which now looks tasteful and coherent.

Many of the latter BMW designs are growers, but I can’t see this lot following that trend.

“According to the designer, Kheza, the humongous grille of the 7 Series was designed that way to have a much better connection with the rest of the BMW lineup. It's also that way in proportion to the car's position in the lineup. In short, bigger saloon, bigger grille. This can also be observed with the 2019 BMW X5 and the X7 – the bigger SAV, of course, has the bigger grille.”

Also what I read.

Whenever I see some decision in car engineering/design that seems ridiculous to me, I just remind myself that it wasn't made with people like me in mind.

Surely there must be a more stylish way to get air in the engine bay with smaller grills.
