BMW i8 Service Pack - does not include 'door' service
Discussion
So the wife bought a pre-owned i8 with a service pack from our local main dealer a month ago. It went back today for it's 1st main service. Was told that as well as the standard stuff the doors were due a 'hinge' service (ha!) and the gas struts are to be replaced as part of this main service. However, this was not included in the service pack apparently! £178.00 for the 'door' service. Nice.
Why not just charge a bit more for the service pack rather than drop it on the customer later, or at least explain at the POS this is not covered.

Hmmm - is it in the 'proper' service schedule or is it one of those things, like "mandatory a/c service" that dealers just make up?
If it's in the schedule then I'd expect it to be covered. I've had this row (twice) with VAG cars where the brake fluid is on a 3yr interval but they don't include it. On Mercedes everything that's called for is covered - but the plan is expensive.
Having said all that, if it needs new struts I'm surprised it's not more expensive.

They'll be standard gas struts used for many other automotive applications (quite possibly on other BMW models), and I suspect they're hardly the hardest thing in the World to fit (I'm no BMW technician, but I replaced both bonnet gas struts on my previous E36 - It was an absolute piece of p
ss to fit them)Not everything from BMW is massively expensive!
Apparently it's part of the service. If it isn't done and there's an issue with the doors the warranty will not cover you. Plus it has to be done by BMW with 'genuine' parts. Fortunately I know the dealer well, as soon as I mentioned that it was stupid/misleading etc for it not to be included they spoke with the sales team who covered the cost. Still, if I didn't have such a good rapport with them or had bought the car elsewhere it could have been a different story.
The gas struts are huge compared to normal ones however I doubt they're that expensive and know they won't be manufactured by BMW. I broke a much smaller locking gas strut on my Lambo that holds the engine cover up. They wanted ridiculous amounts for one, it turned out to be an Audi part which was about £30.00. Think even that had a different manufacturer's stamp on it when I fitted it, maybe Bosch from memory. When I googled that it was about £10.00. Lambo wanted well over £200 I seem to remember. You get a bull stamped on the part and it will come in a Lambo cardboard box. That's it.

I expect if they developed a fault they would be replaced under warranty. It was just that the dealer told us 'as part of the main service' they are replaced and the hinges are checked and tightened to the correct torque again. I was just surprised it wasn't included in the service pack if this was the case. We were told the service pack is specific to the engine and did not cover this.
