Had a look on this section and not seen much mention of the X1.

I am looking to spend £12-£15k on a car and the X1 seems to fit the bill.

I currently have an A6 allroad. The car needs to be able to access rural lanes and handle muddy fields. Needs a large boot to carry kit and dog.

Is the X1 suitable? If so what engines are best - I know of timing chain issues on the 4 pot BM engines. My allroad has similar issues on the 3.0 TDI.

I want auto does this handle snow and mud ok?

I ran a 2017 X1 , so the current version, for 44k miles. Traded it 2 weeks ago.
Is that the one in your budget ? Came out late 2015.
If so post up here or PM me and I’ll give you my take on it , answer any questions.

I don’t have as much knowledge on the previous generation 2009-2015 ; but it was inferior from every aspect I could compare.

Oldest would be a 2014 newest maybe 2016 so the older version. Is there a major difference between X1 23 and X1 25 or is it just a map?

2016 gets you current version.
I think there are some late 2015, 15 plates , but they were certainly in situ by 2015 65 plates.

There was I believe a 23d and 25d in old generation. From memory 25d was generally referred to as a development over the 23d , so I’m not sure if it’s just a map. I believe it was still the N47 engine.

My car was the newer B47 engine and there was until they killed it off a 25d in this same B47 generation. I believe that was more likely a map to tune it up.

The old generation was RWD biased , but I did a few thousand miles in one and I believe the current generation drives a lot better , although my current generation one was M Sport v SE so not a like for like.,

We have 2016 2.0d xDrive from new. Great for hauling kit and two dogs. 42mpg average. Fast 0-60 around 7 secs. Handles well enough (my other car's a Cayman 981).
Had other SUVs and estates in the past, Audi, BMW, Lexus, Honda, but this is the best so far.
Great in the snow a few years back. Not had it in too many fields but the part time AWD works well.
Our 10th BMW over 33 years.

I would 2nd the comments regarding the F48 X1.

We (the wife’s daily) have a 2016 2.0d xdrive m sport auto and it’s a brilliant car for the family. We have 2 children under 3. It’s very economical quite quick and doesn’t handle like a barge.

If you are able try and find one with panoramic roof, leather and reversing camera.

Only thing I wish we had on ours was front parking sensors as it’s quite difficult to judge the front.

Couple of criticisms are that tyre roar is a bit loud and the gear selector is a bit old fashioned. Otherwise I really can’t fault it.

No issues whatsoever after 3 years and 35k miles. Ours was an ex demo and it’s probably lost about 1/3 in value over 3 years which I don’t think is too bad. We looked at Q3, Evoque and GLA and it stood out in terms of the drive, economy and interior space. Residuals would probably have been better with an Evoque but have heard they have a few reliability issues.
HTH.

One more thing... it MUST have sports seats.
Oh, and also 18" wheels come with non run flats. 19s have run flats and ruin the ride. We tested both wheels before buying. BIG difference to ride comfort. Go 18 for certain.
For the dog, get one of these: https://www.boot-buddy.com/all-products/deluxe-bum...
It Velcro fits and drops out all the way down the bumper.

Thanks good info.
I have only seen 1 with sports seats that's in my budget.

Dog wise I have a trans k9 cage but not 100% sure if it will fit.

My other option is an E class estate which it defo fits in as I had one before.

Isn’t the OP looking at the previous generation X1 though? The one based on a 3 series estate platform rather than the MINI based new one?

If so, we’re on our second (they’re that good).we actively searched for the last of the old model rather than the new.

We took our 1st up to 80k miles and seven or eight years old, never missed a beat. Amazing in snow even on regular tyres, fantastic economy and only ever needed tyres-2 sets in its lifetime.

Both of ours have been X-Drive 2.0d automatics. Latest one is a 2015 run out special with extended leather, panoramic roof and in that M3 orange.

Wife loves it, this one is on regular tyres and they do ride massively better than the old run flat-shod one.

The only thing is, the previous gen X3 isn't much bigger or more expensive, but they do drive nicer imo. They were proper RWD with the front drive bit added whereas the X1 is basically a FWD Mini. I drive an X1 new and found the steering less than brilliant and the road noise annoying. It didn't feel as solid as the X3 either.

Read my post above, the same was true of the previous generation X1, which at circa £12k will be what the OP is looking at?

£15k gets you 23 of the newer F46 2016 X1s on Autotrader.

We don't bother with a dog cage. The F48 parcel shelf splits into two. Remove the rearmost half and leave the front half in situ and it creates an overhang our dogs have never attempted to climb over. Depends on the breed perhaps. 2 x Cockapoos here.

Do NOT buy one with standard seats. Try them, and then Sport seats, at your BMW dealer and you'll understand why.

That's why the majority for sale have standard seats... nobody wants them. You'll be stuck with it long time come resale, as are those majority owners now.
