130i Brake Problem - Help Needed.

Some of you may be familiar with my Readers Car thread for my 130i bought December last year.
The car has been genuinely entertaining and has weedled it's way into my affections more than most of the many and varied cars I've owned over the last 30 odd years.
I have a braking problem that is stumping both me and my local indie (who, to be fair, doesn't claim to be a BMW specialist).
The problem is that when I stamp on the brake (think emergency braking but not necessarily to a full stop) the pedal becomes rock hard; it feels very much like a brake pedal feels if the engine isn't on if you know what I mean. Both my indie and I think it's a vacuum issue; he's checked all the visible pipes but they appear ok.
I'd rather not replace stuff without some expectation of curing the proble hence the post - is anyone able to shed any light on the problem and the likely fix?
