Hi all,

I am looking for an E39 520i 2003 with the M54 engine in it. I need to know what EU emissions class this is please? The ULEZ checker says it is complainant with the ULEZ but would like to double check as they have previously given me false info.

Thanks
Matt

Afraid I can’t help with your car. I did my old 328i E46, not exempt. Mate’s Z4 M54-exempt. My current 330d (2002), exempt.

Hi pal

One of the lads off the 5 forums bought my E39 530i (M54) and that's exempt FYI; but obviously you'll need to clarify yours, however, I'm sure it'll be the same as long as it's running healthy

2002 330d exempt how come? Only EUR 6 diesels from roughly 2014/15 onwards should qualify.

As to the M54s they are EUR3 but fulfill EUR4 NOx limits. M52TUs don't.

Thanks for the reply I am pretty sure the facelift petrol version are euro 4. It seems crazy that there is no definitive way of finding out finding this out especially with all these rules coming in.

Who knows! I put my reg in and it came back as exempt. Maybe the personal reg confused it.

520i 2003 would be Euro 3.

There seems to be a few things worthy of note here.

First, I have a 2001 530i and the ULEZ checker confirms I am NOT subject to the tax.

Second, I have a couple of brochures from the period. The 2001 MY brochure states Eu3, while the 2002 MY brochure states Eu4. Maybe there was a changeover for MY02? I can check these in more detail if you want when I'm home.

Finally, when you look at the actual EU standard regulations for NOx and other pollutants and then compare with what is reported on the V5 for those figures, the 530i has much lower figures. From this you could maybe infer that the cars are even Eu5 compliant. How that is actually demonstrated is open to query though.

Interested in knowing where you land in the end.

Thanks Ricardo for your really helpful reply. If you could double check the brochure with regards to the 2002 change that would be great.

I am just pesmisitic on relying one just the ULEZ checker as it told me my 14 plate 320D was ULEZ complaint a year ago when I got the car and they have now changed their minds and it is EU5.

Thanks

So, I've had a look at the brochures.

The 2000 MY brochure is for the saloon (facelift). It claims Eu4 for "all petrol engines".

The 2001 MY brochure is for the estate. It claims Eu3 instead.

Thanks for that Ricardo.

Maybe the that is a miss print in the brochure for the touring.

Or the touring is heavier, and just slips over the limit?
